Small Block

Serving hearty breakfasts and lunch all day, Small Block is the kind of place only the hip and happening East Brunswick locals know about. The interior is kitsch with red vinyl chairs, and the food is hearty and healthy. Wash it down with a freshly brewed coffee or one of the fine juices on offer.

sorry, just wondering how that latte is coming along?
I don't write reveiws. i read them. I always thought that the people that write crap reviews where they rant on and on about the poor service, the food being cold, should perhaps 'move on' 'get over it'. any cafe can have it's moments, right?

in my case. maybe the waiter was having an 'off' day. maybe he was so busy trying to keep up that level of brunswick 'too cool for school'-ness that he forgot how to play host.

i was impressed with the food, as always.

But having to order my coffee FOUR times from the same guy is pretty shocking, especially given i was one of about 7 patrons. no one should have to wait 50 minutes for a latte, even if it is the best coffee in town.

Small Block is a great little cafe with good food especially the ricotta pancakes. The servic eis friendly and yes it doe sget busy on weekends so avoid if possible. There are also interesting people to check out at Small Block. The coffee is excellent and this place is almost too good to share!

Best Coffee and quality food
Have been to small block several times and have spent afternoons there. I drink a lot of coffee all over town and this is definitely one of the best ones. The food is good quality ingredients and the presentation is nice. Summer breakfast is my favorite and definitely worth its money. The service is great, the staff is lovely, very polite and quick! My fav cafe in town. However I avoid sundays at every cafe in melbourne.

Yummy!!
Considering I never even bother to try eating at Small Block as it looks like nothing special from the outside, The food is fantastic!! Good for 2 of you, don't go in groups as it is a small venue. Very relaxed and cool. If you are looking to go out with your family for brekkie, its probably not the cafe for you. Good to take friends or a partner.

Brunch style food, little overpriced, average coffee.
Not overpacked for 12.30 pm Sunday. Coffee wasn't very strong. Ricotta pancakes with poached pear and cream were very nice but perhaps a bit overpriced at $13 (maybe that's because I am not quite used to melbourne cafe prices). Staff were very friendly. Table service and a glass of cold water as soon as I sat down. Some nice sounding food but I would maybe struggle to go back and pay $16 for eggs - even if they do come with Meredith goats cheese.

Went for brunch on a Saturday morning with hubby, 2 year old and grandparents. 15 minute wait for a table - bearable and not too surprising, but difficult with a restless little one.

Food service was so slow! As soon as we were seated I ordered dahl for the toddler. It took over 45 minutes to be served! Surely they weren't cooking it from scratch? I couldn't believe it took so long. Then, it was way too salty and my child wouldn't eat it. Lucky I brought along a sandwich for him.

The rest of us had the big breakfast. Huge meal and perfectly nice enough, but nothing special - bacon, eggs, mushrooms, hash browns, spinach. This too took ages to be served - somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes. The place was very busy, but it has plenty of waiting staff, so perhaps something needs to be streamlined better in the kitchens.

The collection of toys in the corner and two babycinos helped somewhat with keeping the toddler entertained.

Nice
Really nice place for breakkie and lunch. Had the big breakfast which was lovely and generous. Good coffee and friendly service. But having been there both on a weekend and a weekday, I would have to agree with the previous review - service truly suffers as the crowds come in masses on the weekend (long waiting time and rather brusque interactions). Try going during the week!

Knocks my block off!
Best place for brekkie in East Brunny, and that's saying something coz a few awesome joints have opened up nearby recently. Great, casual staff who don't hound you; some of the best barista's in Melbourne; but the food - it's something else. And the best bit is I live just around the corner!
Only bad thing I can say is - guys, get some new chairs! But when you have coffee and food that is THAT good sitting in front of you, believe me, you don't care what you're sitting on.

Don't go on Weekends
Small Block is that brunch cafe that serves fantastic food with great service from vibrant staff. Unfortunately, everything goes downhill on the weekends. It's not about waiting for a table but it's how one is treated while waiting. The wait staff told us that our table is next and we just got bumped over and over and over. Don't get me wrong. The food is fantastic. I am very partial to the pancakes, omelette, muesli, porridge, salmon and chorizo scrambled eggs. Too bad the service sucks on the weekends.

Such a great joint
I luuurve this place more than any other breakfast joint in Brunswick. Always changing, it has the most interesting and imaginative breakfast menu around. I've eaten absolutely every brekkie item there is.
