Sky Phoenix

Away from the Chinatown hustle and bustle, Sky Phoenix is more of a big white plate kind of restaurant. It's cheap to top up on yum cha over lunch (when it can get quite frantic), or you can come back for dinner when a la carte service takes over and you can relax a little more. Don't miss the delicate almond bean curd dessert - it's a winner.

Worst one ever
I have been eating dim sum for the past 20 odd years and this has got to be the worst place ever.
1. Food is bad. Too greasy, salty and ingredients aren't fresh at all.
2. Service is the worst I have had ever. I can understand slightly rude service at places like this during bustling lunchtime but this has to take the cake. No trolleys were pushed to our table to serve us and so we approached the waitstaff. To our shocking dismay, we were told to 'go away' in an extremely rude tone.
Will never visit this place again. Don't take my word for it. Try the bad service for yourself if you don't believe me.

More than Dumplings
I'm not always a big yum cha fan, on account of the frequently tepid, greasy, gristle-y dishes that look so appetising on the trolley and then disappoint after a couple bites. Sometimes you don't mind, as long as the food is cheap, but it is often a little disappointing. This is why Sky Phoenix was a pleasant surprise. We've been to Sky Phoenix twice recently for yum cha and have been impressed on both visits with the freshness, variety and attentive service. They do the standards well: the pork bun was full of substantial chunks of barbecued meat. The pork ribs were caramelised with honey and black pepper - this is the foodie version of crack cocaine. I'm not sure I wasn't drooling as I sucked the meat off these succulent morsels. The steamed chicken wrap (vegetables in a chicken-skin wrap) was a subtle blending of savoury flavours. It's also easy to balance heavier dishes with lighter ones. You will pay $20-30 per person (without drinks) to walk away sated, but it's all value. They let us sit at our table and chat long after we had finished eating, so no rushing you out the door. The ambience is very pleasant, but it is the food that will keep us coming back.
