For caffeine junkies, this is one mac daddy of a coffee house, crafting its terroir-specific beans in a commercial Toper roaster affectionately called 'Big Boris' and brewing it up with a kind of intensity and passion. Go for what co-owner Martine Folden claims is the best ristretto in town: a smooth, full-bodied grind with chocolate characteristics and floral and citrus notes. Well, that's how they described it; we just though it was damn fine coffee.
There's also a flavour of the week and an organic Cuban blend, not to mention nearly a dozen takeaway grinds whose assortment changes regularly. It would be impossible for the food to keep pace, but it does its proper role as a solid support act, including home-baked roasted muesli; brekkie rolls with cheese and grilled ham or veggies; and, for lunch, the pasture-fed roast beef on organic sourdough. The sarnies are built with artisan Sonoma breads, while the muffins are freshly baked by the Book Kitchen.
It's all good, you'll say, as you kick back on this cutesy street near Central Station, and while away the morning on the sidewalk enjoying Good Living. You'll best fit in by wearing cool sunnies and doing your best pantomime of casual chic - and make sure to time your visit to capture the soothing sun before it ducks behind the surrounding buildings.

the secret is out
Gavin Folden and his hand-picked team are obsessed with coffee and simply prepared, fresh organic food. Only locals and similarly coffee-obsessed aficionados can be found here day in, day out to have their coffee fix from the array of carefully hand-roasted beans. You can see Gav roasting the coffee most afternoons, which is then wholesaled onto other cafes boasting the smoothest coffees on the menu. Bonsoy and Organic milk make the coffee experience here heavenly. But don't tell anyone else!!
