Silo Bakery has long been famous for its fantastic bread (which sells out rapidly each morning) and other baked goodies, which you can consume on the premises or take home with you. It is also legendary for its seasonal breakfasts and lunches, made from exquisite ingredients, such as the breakfast asparagus bruschetta, which is only available in the spring; or the blue cheese and mushroom pizza, which is served in autumn and winter. There's a walk-in cheese room out the back with a thoughtful selection of hard, soft, washed-rind, white-mould and many other cheeses - many Canberra chefs build their restaurant cheese platters from Silo's stock. The wine list is small but well-chosen, with local wineries such as Clonakilla represented.

What's all the fuss about?
Although the omlette I had was nice, it wasn't any better than breakfasts I can get at most cafes around Canberra. The supposedly famous bread was quite bland and hard. The service was slow and rude and Silo was so crowded and busy that I ended up feeling rushed myself - I was glad to finally leave and I definitely won't be going back.
Note: Silo do not take bookings for breakfast, so be prepared to wait/fight for a table.

Not worth it.
$12 for a ham and cheese role and a stale apple tart. How silly. I went to silo based on it's reputation a few years ago. Not worth the time, effort or money. Took ages to get served at 11.15am with hardly anyone in there after pushing past the stench of smokers at the front door. NEVER AGAIN.

What a great little place.
We went there for breakfast on the Saturday and it was great. It is very busy so you may ahve to wait for a table for a while, but it is worth the wait. It isnt open on Sunday though so if you are there for the weekend plan it in for Saturday.

too busy to relax
I found the chaos at Silo too off putting. The cheese room may still be a good draw card, but the bakery side of things has gone down since I first tried there 4 years ago. With so much happening, I couldn't enjoy lunch, and I couldn't get much service easily either.

Dried up
As a kingston local, I want to support our small businesses. But if Silo isn't going to do anything to earn customers' money then they have to accept their own fate. I unfortunately agree with the reports that Silo has abandoned the work once done to obtain its old reputation. The service is poor and rude. The bread which they had been known for is now below par. There are so many other family bakeries to support that offer service and quality that Silo is now a place to avoid. I don't know anyone who's enjoyed it in the last three years - you won't find many locals who bother with it. The prices suggest that you would get quality products with attentive service - not the case. I can't justify the clammer as part of the atmosphere; not when part of the noise is just a series of insults being flung out the back of the place.

Maybe people are expecting something else
This is not a 3 hat restaurant; it is a busy bakery/bistro. It is noisy, it can be very busy and while the service is not great it is certainly not rude.If you are wanting great service and/or atmosphere you should try elsewhere. But if you want a menu that changes every few weeks with a wine list that is small but varied this is the place to come. There are wines from Australia,Italy,France,Spain and occasionally Hungary. Not many but quite a variety. I always start the meal with an antipasto plate which is constantly changing.I will quite happily have a 2&1/2 hour lunch there.

Whither Silo?
After also being somewhat of a Silo devotee, I agree with JaneMaree, they are simply resting on their laurels. They may still turn out good bread, decent coffee (albeit it's almost impossible to get a take away, why do they even offer the service if it takes half an hour??) but their reputation is becoming a joke. Take the Berry woodfired sourdough bakery as a comparison - excellent service, equally delicious bread/pastries, all with a smile. It can be done!

Silo- it like test of your taste
Some years ago I remember a writer friend talking about Jane Austen's writing. If someone tells you that she is a bad writers, it tells you not that JA is a bad writer, but that the person talking knows nothing about writing. I would say that about those peole who think that Silo bread is bad, and particularly thois who rave about Canberra's average family bakeries- most of these sell mass produced mediority, made from packet mixes. Solo uses real ingredients and slow labour intensive methods that produce masterful bread. I love it, but I don't live on it, I still buy sliced bread for sandwiches and toast most of the time, but then Idon't drink Grange or Hill of Grace evry night either

Possibly Canberra's best breakfast
I've lived in Canberra for 8 years and heard all the talk about Silos but had never been able to get a table so one Saturday morning my partner and I made the effort to get out of bed a little earlier and get down there and my GOD is it worth it!! The best breakfast I have had in years, perhaps ever. Great atmosphere, it feels like you're in a little hole in the wall in France or Italy. Love it!

Expensive bread and bad service
Living in Kingston I have gotten to know the cafes in the area pretty well and by far, the worst cafe I have experienced is Silo. Cafe management is non-existent and the waitstaff cannot manage table bookings. I also note that their sourdough bread is getting smaller and more expensive.

Yum Breakfast
I agree with the other comments - they are beginning to rush people in and out because it's so popular - however the Scrambled eggs are divine - a must for everyone to try. Try and get a seat away from the door as it's very noisy with people coming in and out all the time

Not up to expectations
We went for lunch last weekend after many recommendations. The bread and chocolate tart were excellent. However, the antipasto tasting plate at $22 was poor value. The whole place looks a bit jaded and feels like staff are so busy, they don't have time to do the basics e.g. take second coffee orders and sweep up under the service counter at the end of the day. It looked like this hadn't been done for days?!

Silo resting on its laurels
Silo is beginning to rest on its laurels.
After being a Silo devotee for 2 solid years, I believe the standard is dropping.
The portion sizes are becoming decidedly smaller, and it seems they believe because there are people queuing for tables they can rush you in and out.
Yes they make good bread and tarts, but their breakfasts are not what they used to be.
