Silks Bar & Bistro

There's a real touch of class to this suburban bar and bistro, evident in more than just its stylish, contemporary decor. The Silks team are a bunch of smooth operators, with classically-trained French chef Christophe Jerome arguably the slickest of them all. Onetime chef of London's prestigious Escargot Dore and founder of Hobart's fine dining phenomenon, Elbow Room, he now weaves his magic at Silks.

Many have been seduced by his roasted lamb shanks in rich red wine sauce, fresh herbs, root vegetables and potato mash. He's also won a fair few Aussie hearts with his sensational surf and turf - a chargrilled Scotch fillet, dauphinoise potatoes and creamy garlic prawns. Be sure to take full advantage of the licensed bar and find a fitting accompaniment for your meal, and should the mood take you, dine alfresco in the Belmont Tavern's walled-in beer garden.

Gone Downhill
This used to be a reliable favourite but I am sorry to say, it's gone downhill in the few months since we last ate at Silks.

It seems the chef has moved on and the wait staff are all new. They were helpful and friendly.

The food was very disappointing - bland soup, bread out of a bag. The curry was a poor excuse with hardly any flavour and the goats cheese tart was mediocre.

Even the serving sizes wouldn't have you coming bak for more.

Hopefully they can pick up their game and make some improvements.
