Sigiri

"A good restaurant - the pikey end of High Street - are you sure?!" exclaimed my friend, a local, disbelievingly. I am. Very sure.

Tucked away behind bamboo curtains, Sigiri is tastefully decorated, with simple yet elegant timber furnishings complementing the polished timber floorboards, and indigenous ornaments paying homage to its Sri Lankan origin.

Sigiri has long served the Sri Lankan community north of the Yarra, hardly surprising considering the delectable fusion of Portuguese, Dutch, English, Indian and Malay influences on offer. My recollection of Sri Lankan cuisine was of extremely spicy food, my personal predilection. For those not sharing my enthusiasm for blazing palate and sweaty brow, you'll be pleased to learn that the menu was far gentler than anticipated - you can't go wrong with the buriyani or the wattaka which feature among the many mild options. For the heat-seekers, the harakmas and miris malu come highly recommended.

Too many options? The banquet dinner available on Friday and Saturday nights includes more food than you could imagine eating for only $25.00. Little wonder that bookings are recommended, if not essential. Sigiri also serves wine by glass or bottle and offers a healthy choice of beers including Sri Lankan favourite, Sinha, as well as being wine-only BYO.

Dinner ruined
I had a terrible dining experience at Sigiri. The food was really good, but the management insulted and embarassed us. We had the banquet for $25, and a friend arrived half way through dinner to wait for us to finish. The manager told us that he would have to pay $25 if he wanted to wait in the restaurant, and when we suggested this was unreasonable he told us he would charge the waiter who let him sit down. We were outraged, and after several attempts to change his mind, we were forced to leave without finishing our meals. It was truly disgraceful.
