One meal at Shoya is nowhere near enough to get a good handle on this place. Boasting six different levels it is a function centre, izakaya, karaoke bar, barbecue grillhouse and Japanese fine diner all rolled into one.
The lower levels are where you want to head for good fun in a group. The basement and ground floor house the smokeless barbecue tables for some DIY grilling fun, Japanese-style. Heading to the third-floor karaoke rooms is entirely optional, depending on the singing ability of your party.
Levels one and two are a more intimate affair. Think elegant minimalism, tatami mats and full table service. This is definitely first-date territory, and the world-class sashimi on offer paired with a sake list that goes blessedly beyond the usual suspects into more refined drops will go a long way to smoothing out any kinks in the night's proceedings.
If you get a chance, the opportunity to watch master sushi chef Shigeo Nonaka on the chef's executive floor isn't something you want to pass up. Seeing the artisan work up close will make you appreciate the food in front of you all the more.

Lunch time sets
Made reservations for 2 here today for lunch, my girlfriend and i both ordered from their special sets, i got the matsu and she got the ume set, they were priced at 38 and 32 dollars respectively. When we arrived we were greeted at the door and led up the stairs to our table, all the staff were friendly and the service from their waiters was fantastic, they were attentive and went out of their way to be courteous. The food was amazing, the only fault was one of the pieces of salmon was abit chewy. The fried dishes was a highlight in the set, the tempura prawns, fish, crab and scallop were fresh, this along with their delicious tempura batter and dipping sauce made the dishes a delight. We arrived at Shoya at 12 and didn't leave until 15 to 2, when we left we almost forgot it was a tuesday arvo. The top floor dining area was full, the lighting and decor of the restaurant really compliment each other in creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere that usually isn't associated with lunchtime in the CBD. If you have time, visit Shoya for lunch and be prepared to be very satisfied !

Delicious food
I took my mum there for her bday and I have to say that the food was marvellous. We had the Dugustation menu which is a set menu. I have never enjoyed Japanese food so much, and even though the portions were small, I left full and very satisfied.
I was disappointed that they didn't have the Sake that we wanted to order.
I'd recommend this to anyone for a special occasion. They even gave my mum a serving of small sea urchin cheese cake with her tofu mousse at the end! Everyone was very polite, and on the way out, all the waiters greeted my mum a Happy Birthday.

Total disappointment
I had to write this as soon as I got home, the feeling that I had after coming out of this restaurant was disgraceful. We tried the duck, this is one of my favourite dishes. The first plate arrived, which the whole party tasted, to our disappointment it was super chewy and had to be spat back out onto the plate. This was explained to the waiter - after a short amount of time the next serving of duck arrived with compliments from the chef! It was even worse than the first serving. The quail was ordered so we decided to go out for a smoke, when we returned the quail was sitting on the the waiters' station and we were not served this dish until we had to gesture to the waiter that the food was waiting to be served! I had lived in Japan for 6 years and since been back in Australia for 8 years and eaten Torro on many occasions, where I had been told by the sushi chef that it was wild blue-fin tuna, and was totally impressed, so without hesitation it was ordered. We received three standard slices of Torro that were totally full of sinew! We made a comment to the sushi chef regarding this as we were sitting at the sushi counter as the chef proceeded to tell us that this was the best part up on the ribcage of the fish, which I know for a fact to be untrue. The cost per head was $120 with 6 beers being the only alcohol ordered. This was my first visit to Shoya, all I can say is it's a joke, and will be telling all my friends of this woeful experience.

Loved this place!
I'd booked a table for six a few weeks before hand to ensure we got in, but it wasn't overly busy from 9pm onwards. The service was fantastic, the wine & beer lists very broad and the food just amazing. I had a sushi platter for my main ($42) but it was worth it. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals and a great night was had by all. I'll be back for sure!

Dissapointed after 2nd try!
Spent $250 here on 7 entrees to share for 2 people and a bottle of wine! Left unimpressed and hungry; we tried the house specialties but these just didn't hit any heights for us. Nothing had the wow factor that entices you back. Service was great but that was because it was so quiet on a Saturday night?

Shoya was a disappointment
I made a booking for dinner at Shoya, excited because I'd heard so many fantastic reviews about the place. We arrived to be told we had to choose from a set menu. Earlier in the day when I booked I was not told that the normal menu was not available so I was a bit disappointed. The service was terrible. The waiters seemed lovely but had no idea what was going on and it took great effort to get their attention. This would usually not bother me but when you are paying $150 per person you would expect exceptional service. The food was ok but nothing special and was no better than the Japanese place I go to which is usually $40 per person. So save your money and go somewhere with better food and better service! I had read fantastic reviews about this place and it definitely did not live up to expectations.
