Shire Cafe

Headed by chef Mike Munroe (of Prahran's Babble), and co-owned by Richmond footballer Mark Coughlan, Shire Cafe certainly has the backing to aid its growing reputation as Fitzroy's hippest casual dining spot. Of course, the wholesome great food helps.
The decor mixes bluestone walls with chandeliers, offset by modern paintings, a Victorian dresser and lively jars of preserves that concoct a blend of cosy cottage and chic contemporary. From the namesake Shire Beef Burger with lettuce, mayo, tomato, cheese and beetroot, to the popular breakfast ciabatta stuffed with avocado, bacon, alfalfa, cottage cheese and Tabasco, the menu boasts an enticing blend of gourmet and healthy. The colourful display of counter meals ranges from wraps and salads, but it's the breakfast offerings such as the tomato, basil and goats cheese omelette and poached plum Bircher muesli that have made Shire's name as a cafe. The desserts - which range from the rich chocolate brownie with fudge sauce to a simple apple and rhubarb crumble - are much like the cafes decor and vibe: a perfect combination of the decadent and homely.

Just the best place
I'm in Melbourne once a year but I will go out of my way to return here when I come back. Fitzroy (like many inner-city suburbs) is full of try-hard cafes; everyone thinks that as long as they have a coffee machine, the right radio station and a couple of chairs, they'll be an instant success.
What they're missing is soul and quality and this place has both in spades. A grown-up cafe for a grown-up suburb.
