Legend has it that this is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Australia. It has relocated in recent years, but is still popular. The crowd is mainly students enjoying a menu that changes frequently, while still retaining everyone's favourite dishes that don't break the bank. It's shown time and time again just how good vegetarian food can be. The plates are filled with modern Asian-flavoured delicacies that explode with flavour in your mouth. A neat dessert menu is available too.

Hidden Shakahari Gem
The front facade of the Shakahari restaurant could be easily mistaken for a quaint little house. On entering I walked down a maroon coloured corridor that leads to a cosy yet vibrant dining room. The waiter greeted us with a beautiful and warm smile and instantly put us at ease with his polite and humorous banter. The menu is a mixture of modern Asian and Indian cuisine with a western twist. My partner and I ordered three dishes that we shared between us. I thoroughly recommend the Tale of Avocado Rolls that is charmingly presented on a brilliant green coriander puree. The Legend Satay dish is also another highlight but I recommend sharing this between two as the satay sauce, rich and sweet with crunchy peanuts accompanied with pickled vegetables would be slightly overpowering in flavour if you were to eat the whole dish, but in small amounts are a delight to the palate. I found the cost exceptionally reasonable, the innovative thought has gone into these successful and delicious dishes with the exceptional standard of service make this my favourite vegan restaurant in Melbourne. I left the restaurant with a spring in my step and not the usual heavy greasy feeling that I seem to get from a lot of other vegetarian restaurants.

The paella was not paella, the couscous dish was dry and the red, red passion left us lacking. For so few dishes on the menu, Shakahari could certainly do better. Entrees were enjoyable - avocado rolls and mushrooms in particular. Nice atmosphere but a little pricey for what we got (vegetarian food does *not* cost the earth to make!) Will come back when more effort is put into the dishes. Main discrepancy was the dishes not really matching what is advertised on the menus.
