You don't have to go far along Beaufort Street for coffee and cake, but if you take a small detour down Walcott Street, your efforts will be richly rewarded. Here, in a tiny little cafe, highly accomplished French chef Olivier Collas creates delectable cakes and pastries fresh daily. He's widely renowned for his almond and chocolate croissants, and his palmiers are said to be as good as you'd find in any fine patisserie in Paris. The savoury selection is just as impressive, with imaginative titles such as the Pavarotti (chicken, avocado, semi-sundried tomatoes and brie on a toasted panini) and the Atlantic (smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, onion and salad in a fresh baguette). Olivier's lemon and lime tart and chocolate mousse cake beckon from within the glass counter display, so you may find yourself going in with good intentions, only to be seduced into ordering seconds too. It's popular for takeaways, but there are five small tables out front, all under the shade of umbrellas if you care to linger a while.
