If you thought the idea of lunching in a picturesque valley, surrounded by birds, bees and glorious flora was a thing of Jane Austen novels, think again. Just a 20-minute drive south-east of Adelaide, the Scenic Restaurant is true to its name with striking views of the Norton Summit bushlands. You'll often find patrons sitting on the colonial-style balcony, sipping red wine, enjoying the scenery and listening to the quiet sounds of chirping birds and insects. If it's wintertime, the staff tend a crackling open fire while serving diners the best in local and international cuisine. On offer are such specialties as the gourmet duck pie and the kangaroo fillet. The lamb mignons are also a much-loved item and are best served with an aromatic house red - marinated in rosemary oil, they come with sweet corn, tomato, basil and potato salsa. For vegetarians, there's the tantalising crepe, which is served with a creamy white wine sauce. The owners have lovingly maintained the rustic-style building and have filled it with antique splendour. If she were alive, surely Jane Austin herself would approve.

The Breakfast Blog - "The real selling point of the Scenic is the balcony seating, where you can stare into space and be thankful that you're up here in Rivendell, not down there on the plains of Mordor."

Give me a home among the gum trees
We wandered in to the Scenic Hotel while on a drive through the hills on the first fine weathered Saturday of spring - what a delight. We were ushered on to the balcony and shown to a table with a view to the city and beyond and close enough to the trees to watch the brightly coloured parrots frolic in the beautiful day. It was spring after all and they were out to impress more than we diners. The wine list appeared comprehensive but mostly by the bottle - one glass of sparkling red and an ale for us. Although the meal arrived with a steak knife, a butter knife would have been adequate as my piece of sirloin was not only cooked to perfection but was the most tender and tasty piece I have ever experienced. The staff were attentive without being bothersome. Their advice was well considered and entirely accurate. My only regret is that I had not been to this gem previously

Potential
Breakfasted Sunday morning, potato rosti uncooked, hollandaise sauce was out of a packet, sausages supermarket grade, tomatoes were average, no music, service slow. So much untapped potential.
