Sato is a humble Japanese restaurant on fashionable Melbourne Street, cosily decorated with parchments and photographs of Japanese scenery. Simply furnished with wooden chairs and tables, it also has four sunken horigotatsu-style eating areas. Settle in and order a hot sake or chilled Kirin Ichiban beer before unfolding the menu - this substantial list deserves a little deliberation.
Sushi hand rolls, hot pots, noodles, broths, tempura, teriyaki and rice dishes form an impressive parade. If your dining partner shares your taste for the best, order the kaiseki banquet - a procession of exquisite small dishes, including the heavenly chawan mushi. This savoury steamed egg custard has delicate morsels of prawn floating in its fluffiness. Fried bean curd bags come stuffed with goodies and pickled radish rolls sharpen the palate.
On the rest of the menu, podgy pot-sticker dumplings delight, while Sato's special omelette bursts with prawns, avocado, lettuce and Japanese mayonnaise. Okonomi sushi offers a decadent array of eel, salmon, kingfish, prawns and squid. Gomoku zosui is a unique porridge with seafood, chicken and vegetables suspended in it, or go for the sukiyaki, which presents paper-thin beef slices and vegetables cooked in stock with a raw egg. After gorging on as much of the menu as you can manage, finish with a cleansing green tea ice cream with sweet bean paste.
