Satis

This little organic institution takes the term underground to a whole new level. Upon opening, the proprietors avoided installing a phone, such was their desire to generate a customer base the tried-and-true traditional way - via word of mouth. Apparently owner Sher Ward, previously of Tilley's fame, believes in letting people choose for themselves. And choose they did. On any given day there is a constant stream of diners taking up spots here to sample some of the rich cafe fare.

Satis at Watson
We went to Satis for the first time this morning. It had a nice cosy vibe when we entered but no one greeted us when we arrived (it's a small place) so we were unsure if it was table service or not. We helped ourselves to menus and after no one approached us I went to the bar to order, again I was ignored by the two girls making coffees. Luckily my friend had cash as Satis has no card facilities at all. The food was served within reasonable time but we had nearly finished our breakfasts and had to remind the staff to make our pots of tea. The girl told us that all of the take-away coffees were being made first. The tea suddenly arrived with saucers in place of lids, and the pots were over-filled, so spilt.

The choice of teas and breads was impressive and the food was passable but clearly this place prioritises takeaway coffees over seated customers.

Disappointed in service and coffee...
Waiting forty odd minutes for a coffee is not ok. Getting attitude for asking where your coffee is is not ok either. Getting cold coffee when it finally comes is the impetus for this negative review...

What a disappointment.

Satis is clearly populated by unhappy unproductive staff - the capacity of the place is less than 40 people and it was in no way full this morning - there was no reason for the late cold coffee or the negative attitude.

In future I will be quite happy to dive across town to A Bite to Eat and wait for a much better coffee with happier staff and higher quality food.

I was impressed
My partner wasn't very impressed with his big brekky because it was cold, and it took a while for it to come out, as did for everybody else around us, but apart from that, I was really impressed. I opted for the berry porridge with coconut milk which as boring sounding as it is, was anything but. The strong skim cap wasn't as strong as I hoped, but it was hot, which is more essential, and the quality is good. As for the atmosphere, it is something else. I always lean towards those crowded little quirky cafes with dark walls and eclectic decor, that are tucked away in suburban pockets or alleyways because usually they're the hidden gems. And this one definitely is one of those. All they need to do now though, is buy themselves a couple of extra hot plates to avoid cold meals!

Delicious funky addition to Canberra
I've been here a few times, and love going back for the relaxed vibe, bohemian atmosphere, tasty food and drinks. The menu is small but very tasty. I can never go past the scrambled eggs with potatoes and a feta, chilli and basil sauce - so delicious! Makes you feel like you are somewhere much more exciting than Canberra, like Melbourne or Portland, USA even.
