Sapore

We have just moved to Melbourne from the UK and we are often asked why we made the move. Now I have an easy answer - afternoons like the one we had at Sapore in St Kilda. It was recommended by a friend and on arrival our breath was taken away by the views alone, sat in their street-side area watching Melbourne go by on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the sun. And then the food came. Now I am not easy to please, but boy was I pleased. This was Italian cookery at its finest - nothing fancy or ostentatious, just a chef using sophisticated techniques to produce simple but memorable tastes. Having holidayed in Italy on many occasions I was pleased to recognise some old friends on the wine list and the service hit just the right note - attentive yet relaxed. This was an experience I will be recommending to anyone and everyone - and especially our friends from the UK when they visit.

Our first visit was yesterday - we had a birthday celebration for about 20 people - adults and about 7 kids (all under 5 years of age). We arrived at 4pm and were there for 3 hours, during which we had drinks, nibblies and then an early dinner.

The service we received was exceptional. The staff treated us very well and looked after all our requests which included speacial food, high chairs, things which we not offered on the menu at that time (eg pizzas), etc. They served us promptly, let us take our time in eating and were very indulgent with the kids - who were a little restless and jumped up and down and ran outside to the piazza. I don;t know how they coped with us, but they did a brilliant job. We were delighted with the experience, and will definitely return.

The food was great, and we found it to be great value for money. The lamb is sensational!

I would heartily recommend Sapore, because although we were a large and somewhat unwieldy group, they took excellent care of us and ensured that we had a wonderful experience.

Just want to say that I've been to Sapore a number of times and haven't been disappointed once! The service, the food, the atmosphere - all excellent and I've recommended this place to anyone who wants a nice Italian restaurant to go to.

After yet another visit to Sapore I've decided to finally write a review. I've been coming here regularly for the last few years and it never disappoints. The food is outstanding. The menu is extensive and there are specials to complement it. Yesterday we had two specials, lamb and squid linguine, and they were both extraodrinarily good. You can count on a good atmosphere here, it's always fuller than any other restaurant in the Forum. Before 6pm you can get your parking ticket stamped and pay nothing for parking, but after 6pm a flat rate applies - currently $12.
The only disappointment was woodfired bread - for $4 you would expect something more special than a few slices of the most common and boring Italian white, not even toasted!
