Santiago

A traditional tapas bar, the walls of Santiago are covered in shelves filled with Spanish souvenirs, bits, bobs and bottles. At night, the room is lit by candles warmly reflected against dark timber. They mostly serve tapas, though on Wednesdays and Saturdays you can also get paella.

A bit expensive for what it is.
They repeatedly didn't answer their phone when I tried to make a booking. They didn't reply to the voice message I left. We turned up and got a table. They couldn't understand why they didn't get to the phone. Many of the wines on the list are not in stock. They are expensive for what they are, and all quite young. The food is ok but servings are very small (I know, they are supposed to be raciones, but quite small). Nice ambience. I'd like to see them succeed. They need to improve.

A once regular diner at Santiago
Santiago was my favourite restaurant til now. After arriving for dinner we were informed that we had to be out by 8pm as they now turn the tables around twice on a Friday and Saturday. However we were not informed at the time of booking. The tapas was nowhere on par to what it has previously been. Service was extremely slow and when it was finally bought to our table we felt rushed. Only to have the bill put on our table half way through eating desert! Also be warned! Do not turn up early as you will be told to wait outside in the cold.

disappointed!
After hearing about how great Santiago was from other people I was rather disppointed when I experienced it for myself. when ordering the cheese board and having been delivered 2 slices of cheese not even big enough to put on a cracker and then being told they have run out of blue vein and we have been given two slices of what appeared to be tasty cheese, for a small price of $15, things did not get off to a good start. Not much better when ordering chilli prawns and then been delivered garlic prawns. Maybe they had a new chef! Either way it's a shame because the idea of a lovely little spanish tapas bar in the cosy streets of Middle park is a great concept, just a little over priced and under delivered.

A fantastic original tapas idea
I thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Santiago for their Grazing Mondays. They've got this great new tapas idea where every Monday they serve tiny portions of Spanish bite-sized nibbles in the style of Yum Cha. There are numerous dishes on the menu with options like lamb cutlets rolled in a croquette-like filling and deep fried camembert with this amazing berry sauce. The food was superb. Service was casual and friendly as always. A highly recommended night for real foodies!

Wonderful evening of tapas
We dined upstairs and the atmosphere was great. The food was divine and left you wanting more and more and more. I will definitely be going back on a paella night. Staff were wonderful!

New winter tapas menu
Was back at Santiago last night and tried their new winter menu - fantastic. Lamb shanks are to die for and the beef with blue cheese sauce is heavenly. And finished with a fantastic chocolate pudding. Highly recommended.

Tremendous tapas.
Attentative waiters who knew the menu. Great range of 23 tapas dishes (vegetable and meat). Very reasonable price for tapas. Warm, cosy atmosphere.
