Kew might have seen house prices more than double in the recent real estate boom, but thankfully for us more fiscally conservative folks the increased prices haven't flowed onto the suburb's menus. San Choi on Kew, an unassuming (okay I'll say it - sort of daggy) restaurant on High Street, is one of those places that you go to expecting stock-standard Chinese fare and leave an hour later with a new favourite find, a more-than-content tummy and a whole bunch of lovely waiters as your new best friends.
While clearly not in the running to win any interior design awards, what San Choi lacks in style it makes up for in flavour by offering diners a range of innovative dishes. The adventurous eaters in your entourage are encouraged to look to the walls for inspiration (and maybe a little translation), where colourful scrolls offer much-lauded dishes including the Hong Kong-style hotpot of prawns and glass noodles in XO sauce, crisp-skinned pigeon, and a number of special duck dishes. As self-proclaimed seafood specialists, their tanks are filled with the freshest abalone, oysters, lobsters and crabs, sourced daily and delivered to your plate with panache.
A long established restaurant that's gone from strength to strength, this suburban secret is well deserved of its rave reviews. Testament to its popularity, San Choi is normally jam-packed on weekends, so be sure to book well in advance.
