Perched in a priceless location on the pier, Salt House Bar & Restaurant boasts lengthy harbour, mountain and ocean views, making it near impossible not to unwind and soak up the beauty of Tropical North Queensland. This lavish yet laidback cocktail bar and mod-Oz restaurant is a suave and sultry addition to the high calibre marina dining scene, offering a multi-purpose venue featuring a woodfired grill and open kitchen, a lush oasis-themed outdoor cocktail bar, and a luminous bar that's a live music hub from Wednesdays to Sundays.
On the culinary side, the restaurant's breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas menus hold many attractions, such as the whole-plate-size coral trout, tempura coconut prawns, and seafood bouillabaisse.

It's all about the customer and customer service.....
As a Cairns Northern Beaches local, I am always on the look-out for new dining opportunities. As such, my partner and I have experienced many delightful, local evenings, as we blend in with the tourists and enjoy a night out. Last evening, we decided to give Salt House a go, after being told by another local about the fantastic location and the very sophisticated menu on offer. Unfortunately, we were also told by another local that 'the food was fantastic but the service was no existent once the maitre d turned you over to the waiter'. We opted to go with the former assessment and assign the latter comment to a 'bad day at the office'.... Last evening was my partner's birthday, and after picking a perfect table, we were off to Salt House for what should have been a delightful evening. Sadly, once we were handed over to the wait staff, after being looked after, initially, by a very delightful, personable woman, who clearly understood superior customer service, and seemed to be acting as either maitre d' or house manager, the quality of service and the ambience that should have attended the setting, the occasion and the menu--evaporated! We began to get the feeling that we were in some sort of service 'dead zone' in terms of our location in the restaurant. People seated along the perimetre, on banquettes or long tables, were attended to quickly and efficiently. Those of us out by the water feature seemed to be left out of the mix. We were at Salt House for nearly two hours; and once the house manager handed us over to the wait staff we experienced the following: One re-fill of our water glasses; a extremely lengthy wait between our entree and our main, with no explanation or contact with the wait staff; a very efficient removal of our mains dishes and cutlery once that course was completed, as well as a very efficient presentation of the dessert menu--all done by the maite d./house manager noted earlier, and not by our assigned wait staff person. An order for coffee was placed and arrived at the table nearly 20 minutes later, less-than-piping-hot. At this juncture, given the lack of attentive service, other than the service provided by the maitre d/house manager, I thought it best to finish the coffee and head for home. However, little did we know that we would have to wait 35 minutes to receive our bill!! We signalled this or that wait staff person to get someone to come to our table to give us the cheque, but to no avail. At one point, I even raised my hand and gestured for someone to turn up, but, to no avail, yet again. When the cheque finally arrived, it was handed to my guest, minus a pen. Finally, a pen arrived and the transaction was completed. And as the evening began, it ended--with the delightful person who started what should of been a wonderful experience handing me my receipt and thanking me, by name, for my patronage. At that point, as much as I appreciated that gesture, I was numb and in need of leaving the place. I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was. Beautiful setting, beautiful food, upmarket prices, dreadful service! And when I think about sitting there for 35 minutes for the privilege of parting with nearly $120, I do not have the urge to break into song!! Salt House is a special place with huge potential--it was packed and much more so that any other restaurant we passed......but I cannot help but think that so many of those guests were tourists who were there for a couple day's stay in Cairns--not locals who are the backbone of the restaurant industry, locally. We need a place like Salt House, but we need a Salt House that lives up to its potential as a five-star venue. You need to lift your game, guys!!
