Salt Food Wine Coffee

The name is a pretty blunt summary of what this eatery is all about, but Salt offers more than just the boring old basics. The ever-changing menu combines simple cafe fare (their breakfasts come highly recommended) with more complex creations. In true modern Australian style, the menu might feature flavours from the Mediterranean to Asia.

Don't even bother
A friend and I went to Salt this morning for a nice relaxed catch up. Sadly the staff at Salt didn't care for relaxed.

We arrived at 10am and were seated immediately. We also got menus immediately and immediately had the waitress looking over our shoulder prompting us for our order (we'd been there less than 5 minutes). After giving the waitress our order we got our meals almost immediately....The meals were cold and the eggs weren't cooked properly. I got the distinct impression that they have rows of 'favourites' cooked and ready to go before customers even order.

After finshing the parts of our meal that were cooked (approx 10 - 15 min) we had the waitress prompting us for another order - we hadn't finished our coffee and had only just finished our meal so we ordered nothing else (but were planning on another coffee in a few minutes). Within 5 minutes we had the bill on our table and within 1 minute we had the waitress asking if it was ok to take the payment away - we hadn't even had a chance to look at the bill!

From being seated to paying the bill our not-at-all-relaxing (or tasty) breakfast took 35 minutes.

All in all an unpleasant and disappointing experience. The service was pushy and the meals were undercooked and overpriced.

Not the same
Over the years my friends and I have become avid Salt fans. The impeccable service, the quality of food, we could never fault. However a recent experience has certainly left a very bad taste in our mouths.

It was a Saturday morning breakfast, and surprisingly they were not jam packed. With 8 floor staff (we counted) it took 10mins for a waiter to notice our arrival.

We ordered and our food was delivered unbelievably quickly. However, the poached eggs and bacon were cold and the toast very soggy. Coffees when they eventually arrived, were cold and it took 15mins for a milkshake!!!

We'd known that it had recently gone though a change of ownership; with big shoes to fill, perhaps the new owner(s) have bitten more than they can chew!

Air Con?
We were at salt on a fairly busy friday at around midday and as it is such a small place I think they have tried to stuff too many tables in. It is very cramped and because it is so open the aircon doesn't work as well as it should, overall it was very warm where we were sitting.

Aside from that we loved the food and the mix and match entree's were great.

Horrible Service
As a Rosalie local, I have been to every restaurant old and new more than once! Salt is no exception, I first went to Salt when it opened quite a few years ago now. I have witnessed it's success and listened to the increasing numbers of detractors and fans. Whilst the food is well presented and the coffee a safe bet, the service leaves a lot to be desired. With the increasing number of patrons the prices have risen sharply, much more than other similarly successful bistros in the area, this accompanied by the time one waitress refused my daughter and her friend service as one didn't plan on ordering breakfast -just a coffee and juice - makes Salt a less than enjoyable meal. I strongly recommmend those venturing to Salt as a result of good reviews to try other, less popular options around the larger Paddington area.

Sunday lunch winner
I haven't eaten out in the Rosalie district for years but lured by my sister's promise of great food, I wasn't disappointed. The fresh, interesting and imaginative lunch menu made it hard to make a decision but settled on the sand crab omelette as I was determined to have room for dessert! A good choice of wines available, we settled on the Gerwertztraminer which was just right for Sunday lunch. Service was impeccable from a lovely waitress just back from the UK, and an obvious fit for the restaurant. And although my meal was well and truly filling, I did manage to fit in the caramel bread & butter pudding with lashing of cream and icecream that I shared with my fellow diners. Really lovely relaxed atmosphere, will go back again!

I can't believe someone hasn't placed a comment here already!
Salt is a fantastic place to eat, drink, read papers and or watch the Rosalie scene pass you buy. I highly recommend breakfast at the weekend, although it's always very popular so be prepared to wait a bit for your delightful breaky to get to you! Just have another coffee!
