Sal's is an older-style lunchtime institution that has half re-invented itself as a chic cafe/bar. The huge space occupied by Sal's is divided between these two eras: facing the street on Salamanca Place is the typical bain-marie outlet you might have wandered into in the 1970s, but through the glass doors is a modern fit-out opening onto gorgeous Salamanca Square, tourist destination par excellence.
The restaurant and bar suit a quick drink (there are lots of beers on tap and comfy couches) and if you're visiting Hobart you are almost certain to find yourself hungry or tired in Salamanca Square - Sal's is a very comfortable place for a pick-me-up. Take one of the outside tables by the fountain or warm up next to the exposed old sandstone walls inside. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is laidback and fun and live music frequently features.
