Sale E Pepe

It's hard to stand out on Lygon Street when you're offering Italian food on such a competitive restaurant strip, but with its recently renovated spacious upstairs dining room, family-friendly policy, and red and white chequered picnic-style table settings, this place has a fresh and unique appeal. Sale and Pepe - meaning salt and pepper in Italian - is less than basic when it comes to cuisine. $41.50 tops the price for mains with the exceedingly popular chef's mixed grill - prime porterhouse, lamb, home-made pork sausages, chicken fillet and garden salad.
Welcoming hosts and owners Raif, George, Ned and Daniel emphasise the restaurant's focus on seafood, hooking customers in with tender calamari, whiting and snapper or their more than twenty different types of home-made pasta and constantly revised weekly specials.

Sip on imported Peroni Italian beer or pick from almost 40 imported Italian wines, or indulgent cocktails like the Chocolate Eclair (Cadbury cream liqueur, Kahlua and cream) and designer coffees which blend hot espresso with whipped cream and liqueur. Not all the fun is for grown-ups though, with a special kids menu offering toasts, spaghetti and calamari and chips.

We enjoyed the food and had great service.
1st time patrons and I do NOT know and am NOT related to anyone at this place. Lady outside proactively sought our custom with "My Mum's the Chef". Whimsical but clever. Also offered 25% off the bill with 1st drinks and Bruschetta free. Now this is STANDARD today with all Lygon St restaurants and if you didn't get it then you have cheated yourself. Service was prompt and attentive throughout. Water was FREE but they charge for MINERAL WATER of course. Spaghetti Marinara was VERY GOOD. Veal Fiorentina was okay. Tortellini Napoli was fairly average but the Fillet Mignon was OUTSTANDING. House wines were cheap Shiraz and Sauvg Blancs but if you want better then order a bottle of your choice naturally. Only reproach was the bartender, an older man who was loudly critical of almost every waiter whilst arguing and abusing them throughout the night. Prices were NOT unreasonable and on the balance, I will return again.

A Poor Excuse for Italian Food
I don't know how it passes as 'Italian' when the Amatriciana with chunky sandwich ham in it is considered authentic and was trying to pass as an Arrabbiata. The waiters were rude, offered a "free" bottle of wine yet charged us at the end for it. I can safely say I will never go back again.

The 4 of us went to this restaurant because we had a Entertainment Book voucher, and because the spruiker told us 'Free first round of drinks, free bread, and your meals for free if you're not happy'.

So we sat down on a table on the pavement. Firstly, dirty water glasses. The menu is horribly overpriced, and when the meals came out we were definitely not happy.

Fettucine primavera - huge chunks of broccoli, carrot and onion. That was it.
Spaghetti marinara - unopened mussels. Cannelloni - dried-out ends on the pasta.
Eye fillet - a not-so-fresh scotch fillet came out instead.
Garden salad - wilted lettuce, dried-out cucumber, tasteless tomatoes.

All topped off with dried-up shaker parmesan.

I won't go on but they didn't live up to their guarantees, and the night came to almost $100 (that's after the discount).
