Saldechin

It's not often that you walk into a restaurant and feel like you're making a grand entrance, but at Saldechin, you're stepping into a heritage-listed former bank building worthy of admiration. Gazing across the marble-walled, high-ceilinged interiors and gigantic windows, you'll see a classic Asian tearoom replete with plush lounges and elegant table seating, suitable for both casual moments and formal forays. Similarly, the menu miraculously morphs to suit the occasion, beginning the day with completely fresh breakfast staples like toasted croissants and eggs Benedict.

By lunch, yum cha steps into the spotlight, featuring everything from gourmet pork spring rolls to gluten-free rice noodle rolls. Most surprising is the dinner at Saldechin, which is described as "Cajun Asian". This intriguing combination includes Cajun beef skewers, duck and shrimp stir-fry, and for another American twist, authentic buffalo chicken wings. To go completely wild, you can try something from "The Wild Gourmet" menu of native Australian bites, like the five-spice kangaroo fillet. Saldechin truly knows how to deliver a diverse menu that doesn't skimp on quality.

Not planning to return
A couple years ago we had some nice tapas with wine at Saldechin before a play at Festival Center. Location is great, venue quite beautiful. So we bought a discounted voucher for brunch there from Living Social... WOW, major disappointment. It was the singularly least impressive breakfast we've ever had in Adelaide. Frozen hash brown triangles, overbaked... same with tiny 3cm hard dry crab cakes. The bed of fresh spinach was gritty, unwashed. The supposedly grilled yellow tomatoes came in a bowl, a pile of limp squashed flavorless mush with no sign of grilling. We had the impression that everything had been thrown together at 8am and sat in bain maries til we ate at 11:30. With the exception of the poached eggs... no one can pull off pre-cooked poached eggs, and these were perfect. I paid an extra $1.70 to upgrade from regular to mug size flat white. Coffee was good. Bah.

Not sure what to expect
I dined last Thursday night with a group of colleagues, one who had walked past "the most amazing looking restaurant" and made the recommendation. He was right in saying that the place looked amazing with it's high ceiling and lovely marble walls. The dissapointment started when we ordered beers and although there were only 6 diners and three staff on it took 15 minutes before the final drink arrived at the table. We started with some tapas... deep fried samosas taken straight from the packet. The Chirozo was over basted in sweet soy sauce and utterly dissapointing. I ordered the duck main, which was cooked okay, still slightly moist, however no "creamy" spinach, more wilted leaves of drowned spinach. Where was the sauce to accompany the dish?? our waiter enjoyed a talk, however I sat in amazement wondering why thius place is not packed every night as it is situated right in the middle of town. I am sure on Friday night the place buzzes with office drinkers, but I am not sure that this is the best use of the space. My recommendation is tighten up the menu so that it is an after thought between doing yum cha doing the day and using whats left for the night menu.

High on looks, low on substance
This place is gorgeous with it's Chinese lacquer furniture, marble pillars & high ceilings, but what a crazy set-up for service. Our group of 7 had to designate who was going to queue to place our order - a process that took about 20 minutes- that could have been better spent chatting with our friends, then waiting for the food- about 30 minutes & the piece de resistance- queuing for 40 minutes to pay.
We didn't pay at the start because we thought we might want cake & coffee later. I am not surprised they take your credit card as surety, as we would have walked out otherwise. The place was only about half full & regardless there is no excuse for a system that takes one order at a time- it's like having only one waiter on the floor to take orders in a large restaurant, only worse, as one of your group has to be standing in line the whole time. I just do not understand the reason why places like this do not have proper table service- well, apart from it's perceived cost cutting benefits. I think it is a false economy however. A good waiter should be able to make sure you have all you want- more drinks without hopping up to join a queue every time. And our group went somewhere else for cake & coffee rather than queue again.
The food was uneven- the baguettes were reportedly very nice, but my spinach noodle dish was tiny & the spinach gritty. I'd love to go back to experience the lovely ambiance, but only if /when they have addressed the service issue. If a restaurant doesn't have table service I expect the prices to be much cheaper- some of that money they are saving on staff should be passed on to the patrons.

Promises so much
I have been to Saldechin at least 10 times since they opened. The room is brilliant and always impresses interstate and overseas guests, so well worth it on that alone. The food has some high and low points. Firstly, if you want to meet after work and have drinks, you have to order your dips or dumplings quickly, because after 6pm it switches to the dinner menu. Well, the dinner menu is ok, but it is not worth the money compared to other Adelaide establishments. So you are faced with the, meet for drinks then go elsewhere for dinner quandry. If you order the dip plate bring your magnifying glass, seriously. The dips are always tasty, but miniscule is the best description. Nowhere serves smaller. And although the Maitre de is great, recently staff have taken to touching the customers, calling women 'love' (on a first meeting) and this is not in the job description. The lounge seating looks great but is not comfortable for most people, but the room is great and when they have live music you can forget the little things.

Fantastic yet again
We met a friend for Yum Cha and about 5 pots of tea! we ordered a number of food items and lingered for the afternoon which turned into finishing with cake and more tea, walking out about 8pm.

It wasn't as busy as it was when we'd been there previously and although the service was good then, it was brilliant this time. Lovely staff took very good care of us and really made sure we had a great time.

I highly recommend this venue for it's yum cha, dips, cakes, teas......and next time i'll possibly even sample one of their martini's.

Really liked it
I thought the meal sizes were OK for what we paid. We both had the Wagyu beef and noodle salad. It was very tasty although a little bit grissly.

We were greeted right away by a lovely guy who found us a table although we hadn't booked - and it was very busy.

Lunch took about 20 mins to arrive but it was very busy like i said.

The venue is just lovely. beautiful decor and has a nice feeling about it thanks to their lovely staff.
