If there's someone worthy of the title "sushi master", Shaun Presland would be the man. Formerly a chef at Sushi E, Nobu and Teppanyaki, Presland brings his passion for all things modern Japanese to Sake Restaurant and Bar, a chic communal dining sake tavern in the heart of The Rocks. As the name would suggest, sake is the drink of choice here. Your throat certainly wouldn't go dry with around 50 varieties of sake to choose from, though let's not forget the innovative cocktail list, featuring such tongue-tinglers as the Skinny Sumo, with Shochu Tantakatan, lime juice, shiso leaf, vanilla sugar and sparkling wine.
Away from the bubble and fizz and onto the nourishing nosh, Sake's menu consists of cool and hot Japanese tapas bites, followed by skewers, soups, sushi and sashimi platters, and mains like the miso butterfish, popcorn shrimp, and classic beef teriyaki. Finally, the dessert, tea and coffee options show a continued devotion to modern Japanese right to the end of the meal, featuring a green tea ice cream and various Japanese herbal teas.

Service (tick tick) Atmosphere (tick) Food (?)
Going to a relatively new restaurant in a group of 7 can be a dangerous exercise...particularly when we had booked for a table of 6(!). The staff were very accommodating, more so when explaining to a group of Sake (the drink) amatuers what we should be selecting from the extensive list. Our group was all about sharing and Sake did not disappoint with a numerous range of share dishes guided by the staff on portion size etc. My only criticism comes with the food, although good, quite uninspiring with a decent price tag. A standout was the Wagyu beef, miss the sushi set which was dry and bland. A great night out with an ok fill of food missing just that little something...

Should do better
While the restaurant looks great and must have cost quite a bit, the food is quite a letdown. The sashimi & nigiri are fine but cooked dishes very mediocre. The signature dish is nothing but sliced kingfish with a sliver of jalapeno, sprig of coriander & yuzu sauce. And it was prepared as it arrived within literally a few minutes of ordering on a cold plate. Not inspiring. A great place to gather with friends for drinks and some nibbles but you pay to be in the room. Hope they bring up their level.
