A taste of authentic Vietnamese food, without the need for a train ticket to Cabramatta: This slender ochre-hued room on Oxford Street hosts a menu of more than 135 dishes - including a heft of vegetarian choices for the herbivores, and a swathe of kookier options, like crocodile fillet braised with lemongrass and fresh chilli. Those seeking a bit of meaty grunt might gravitate to the grilled wild boar, which comes squatting on a light bed of lettuce and herbs. Most visitors can't go past Saigon Bay's version of banh xeo; a luminescent yellow half-moon of crispy pancake filled with prawn, pork and the crunch of bean sprouts. Friendly family-style service has helped keep Saigon Bay a staple on Oxford Street since it opened in 1993. These days an online alter ego means you can reserve a spot for more frenetic Friday and Saturday nights through their website, and those living in neighbouring suburbs can take advantage of free home delivery with the click of a mouse. More fresh spring rolls on the couch anyone?

A delightful dinner
Wishing to expand my culinary portfolio to include Vietnamese, my friend and I descended on Saigon Bay last night armed with a bottle of our favourite wine and a week's worth of catching up to do. Despite the inevitable Saturday-night-on Oxford-Street rush, we were immediately seated and our wine glasses were filled by our demure, efficient waitress. No sooner had our menus closed that two eager waitresses sprang forth to take our order. The service is professional yet relaxed. Our water glasses were refilled throughout the night -before we even noticed they were empty.
Upon the very swift arrival of our garlic rice, a portion was spooned into our bowls; the spicy salad and tofu hotpot were carefully arranged in the centre of the table. Perhaps the spicy salad could have been have done with a bit more energy, being a little too subtle for my taste. But the glorious fried-garlic aroma that rose from the rice was matched in flavour, and the pleasant tofu hotpot won extra points with the delightful inclusion of fleshy strips of robust mushroom. At $17 each, we were more than satisfied. Minties accompanying the bill made the garlic rice all the more worthy. While the interior could do with a little more personality, it’s clear that people come here to enjoy tasty food and great service.
