Safi

Middle Eastern cuisine may be well represented on Sydney's restaurant scene, but diners shouldn't arrive at this north Sydney venue expecting the same old menu. Safi represents a more modern take on things, beginning with the decor. This slip of a restaurant is a slick, airy spot - a white room minimally decorated with wall hangings and rugs.

Those au fait with Lebanese cuisine will be familiar with many dishes on the menu, such as baba ghanoush and falafel, but chef Vic Ossian delves deeper into the Middle East with dishes from Syria, Turkey and Armenia, too. These plates are all designed to be shared, so take some friends and divvy up spoils like muhammara (a chilli and walnut dip topped with olive oil and pine nuts) or golden pastry stuffed with onions, olives, mushrooms and cheese.

Not worth it
A lovely little restaurant with great service: pity the food is so mediocre. I love Middle Eastern food and was dismayed at the offering here. Perhaps we didn't order the right dishes: but things started very badly when the $11 beetroot salad was literally a tiny side plate of chopped tinned beetroot. The kafta wasn't much better and reminded me of McDonalds meat patties, similarly bland. Don't waste your time going here.
