Sabroso

In the concrete jungle that is western Melbourne, it's a relief to find Sabroso, a cafe slash bar that offers punters some welcome respite from the shades of grey. A petrol station in its past life, this funky little venue has scrubbed away all traces of exhaust fumes. Organza curtains separate the dining from the drinking area, resulting in a cosy ambience.

Western European at its core, but with an Aussie twist, the menu here is all about sharing; there are a few mains available, though, for those who never mastered that particular art. The salt and pepper squid and wagyu beef are popular with the locals, and the Portuguese tart won't disappoint if you're keen for a stroll down the sweeter side of life. A suburban secret that's won locals over with its cheeky charm, Sabroso well and truly manages to hold its own in the cutthroat arena that is the Melbourne foodie scene.

Mid week dining
I discovered this delightful establishment mid week with a friend.
The staff were very friendly and sociable.
We opted for the bar menu and ate outdoors. Three delicious sides were enjoyed by both of us. The salt and pepper squid was divine as was the pesto which was part of the trio dips.
Very well priced and a great atmosphere. A gem to have a few minutes walk from home.

Moreish!
I'm lucky enough to be just down the road from this gem. Food is terrific (the homemade bread is unbelievable) and service is always friendly and attentive. The sharing-style tapas set-up means that it's possible to try virtually everything on the menu- and for only $8 a pop! Great for a relaxed catch up, but cosy enough for an intimate dinner too. Excellent.
