Ruchi South Indian Cuisine

Named 'Ruchi' after the Indian word for taste, this South Indian restaurant stays true to its brazen name. With options ranging from the time-honored tandoori to sumptuous three-course banquets, it has a selection to suit all palates and budgets. Vegetarians especially, are well catered for, with the choice of nine entrees and eight mains, including eggplant cooked in a rich gravy of peanuts, coconuts and sesame - an interesting and subtle twist on the much-loved purple vegetable. For traditional meat lovers, there's the signature com-mix dosai - rice and lentil crepes stuffed with spicy mince and potatoes. For those opting for a quiet night in, Ruchi's offers a convenient takeaway service with free local home deliveries. However, the space offers all the comforts of home with a casual feel and exposed wooden beams, green carpets and generous dining tables for big families. It's an ideal place for a low-key, mid-week dinner and with a fully licensed bar, you can settle back for a drop of wine while you're at it.

Bad experience
I have been to Ruchi at Belconnen twice. Both times I had bad experience when dining with my mates.

1. The service was extremely slow despite the restaurant not being very full.
2. I was overcharged both times.
3. The staff would not even apologize for the incorrect billing nor delay for serving the food.
4. The food was ordinary and were of very small portions.
5. The timing of the food delivery was appalling. They would serve the curry but had to wait more than 5 minutes for the rice. By the time rice got served, the food was cold.

There are other Indian restaurants in Canberra which provide better dining experience.

Mixed experience
I'd been to Ruchi's Manuka and loved it and decided to check the Belconnen one as well. I must have caught them on a wrong day. The food was excellent, but the service was extremely slow despite the resturant not being very full.
The mixed non-vegeterian starters was great, so were the mains. At $30 pp with dessert, was reasonably priced.

Good value and good food
We have been to Ruchi a few times over the years and find it interesting when we return to compare the food and service with other restaurants.

Ruchi stands supreme for service and mouth watering food. The dosais are superb, generous servings and spicy, without being overpowering.

We haven't tried the vegetarian menu but find the range of south Indian cuisine to our liking. They will prepare special requests for dishes which are not to be found on the menu.

The service is efficient, friendly and always with a smile. They make you feel special. It's always a pleasure to come back!

After many visits, we keep going back. This restaurant has very friendly staff who, after a few visits, know your name. The menu is extensive with no real duds. All the dishes are very flavourful. We particularly love the masala doasai and any of the lamb dishes. This is a keeper.
