It may be tucked away in sleepy suburbia, but the Royal Thai has earned itself a place in the hearts of many Perthites, and confidently competes with the pricier Thai food on offer in the centre of town. Bangkok-born chef Tuan learned the fine art of Thai cooking from her family and when she moved to Perth, she brought that precious knowledge to Dusit Thai before launching the Royal Thai in partnership with her husband David. Previously a steakhouse, the restaurant has an eclectic mix of Mediterranean features and typical Thai paraphernalia, which give the place bags of character. Of course, it's the food that draws the crowds and while the classic sweet Thai green curry remains ever-popular, Tuan tempts diners with her fragrant medley of prawns, squid scallops and fish in a spicy sizzling seafood stir-fry, deliciously mellow Massaman curry, traditional tom yum and steamed whole fish. Many vegetarians have also been seduced by her tantalising tofu and mixed vegetables in red or green curry paste, and few can resist ordering from her sticky rice selection.

Food was the drawcard
I went along to the Royal Thai on a whim with friends and found the Restaurant pleasant but lacking in Service. However the food was the catalyst for my return on several occasions to experience the real flavours of Thai cooking, clean and vibrant. If food is worth waiting for this is a good choice.

Best Thai in Perth!
This is easily one of Perth's best Thai restaurants. The atmosphere is OK, and the service is average (although generally OK), but the food makes up for it. Simple and bursting with natural flavour. I have taken many, many friends here and they all go regularly now. Can't do better than that!

Worst Thai in Perth
My experience at the Royal Thai was so very disappointing. After taking and serving our entrees we had to chase them down (getting out of our seats to have our mains ordered or to order drinks. Our table (and none of the empty one around us) were cleared until either more patrons or our next meal arrived. We didn't get our mains until 9pm (7pm booking) and the food was so uninteresting and overpriced. Sad evening all round.
