Royal George Hotel

A remnant from Ballarat's Gold Rush era, the Royal George Hotel was little more than a dank drinking hole until two years ago. Melissa MacFarlane and Frank Moylan, formerly hosts of the Farmer's Arms, rescued the heritage building by carefully renovated it into a remarkable restaurant.

As founding members of the Daylesford Macedon Produce group, they are strong advocates of using local goods. But of course, being in the central highlands, why would they consider using anything else? There's the free-range Western Plains pork, beef and lamb from Kyneton, the finest cheese Meredith has to offer and Istra smallgoods from Musk. Head chef Chris Wade draws upon Asian and French influences in this unique hotel kitchen.

Trying too hard!
After great expectations, our dinner on Sat night was very disappointing. The pumpkin soup was creamy to the point of tasting like cream with no taste of the vegatable. The rabbit fillet rapped in blood pudding looked great but had little flavour.

For mains the wagu beef was almost entirely 3 fillets of fat. The duck dumplings were tasty. With such fantastic local produce I suggest less focus on presentation and more focus on wholesome flavours would help!

There appeared to be conflict between our waiter and head waiter (owner?) At times this made us feel unfortable.

I will not be returning. Unpleasant with a $300+ price tag!

Romantic evening for two & loved it!! My man got it right !!
My partner & i went for News Years Eve, at the last minute booking , which they accepted.
We had an excellent evening, the service was great , nice atmosphere, candles ,soft music was playing in the back ground. The food was absolutely beautiful , we had 7 courses, i don't usually eat meat, however everything we tried was full of different flavors , well presented. The desserts were absolutely outstanding. The waiters were constantly checking if we were ok and needed anything. I loved it , and would highly recommend it to anyone!! we'll definitely be going back . Thank you to all the staff at The George Hotel and my lovely partner !!

Superb Food
We went to the Royal George for Sunday lunch with a group of 11 for my fathers 70th birthday. We had an initial issue with our seating as the private room we had requested (and viewed in person) had been given to another group. The owners however were very apologetic and offered us a free bottle of bubbly which more than compensated. The room we ended up in was still lovely and the open fireplace was very nice on a cold winter afternoon.

As for the food, it was almost impossible to fault. Because we had a large group we had a restricted menu, but the choice was fine (unless you are a vegetarian as all the mains were red meat, though I'm sure they would cater for you if requested). The entrees were well received apart from the ham hock terrine, which was fine but nothing special. This was the only reason it didn't get 5 stars for the food. My wife loved her fois gras, and the oysters looked good. The mains were venison, rib eye steak and lamb. I tried all 3 and all were absolutely superb. Some of the best meat I have ever eaten. Desserts were also excellent, with the pear tart that I had just beautiful.

Service was very friendly, though a little slow. Food took quite a while to come out which was ok with us as we weren't in a hurry, but could annoy some people. Also we specifically requested only vanilla icecream for a child in our group and it came out 1 scoop of vanilla and 2 of chocolate. A small thing but half a star deducted for that all the same.

All in all we were extremely happy with our meal and would not hesitate to return. Well worth the drive out from Melbourne.

Will become regulars!
Had a really nice meal here on a busy Saturday night, nice touches, lots of use of local produce. Good staff and great local wine list. Food was delicious, you must try the Turkish delight dessert, I don't like Turkish delight but this was beautiful. Will return often!
