very good place - definitely worth a visit
I went with my family just for a casual dinner. Rung up at 4.30pm for a table at 7pm - no issues there.
When we got there, the outside area was packed so we decided to head inside, it was too cold in the outer alfresco anyway. The only thing was the inside was really really dark, like a cave really, there were some areas with mood lighting but otherwise it was dark as anything.
For entree, we ordered the chicken liver & pink peppercorn parfait which was interesting to say the least, but it was very different and i'm sure it'll get a few tongues wagging and a bit of friendly debate between whoever is sharing it as it has a very 'unique' taste.
for mains, my mum ordered the caesar chicken salad which was presented superbly, and tasted just as good. good value too. my dad had the sweetlip snapper, which was a solid dish. The fish was okay but not overly fantastic. but the serving was quite generous. Finally i had the chicken & mushroom tortiglioni, which was another great dish. The tortiglioni was cooked very well and it was a pleasure to eat. The sauce that topped it off was fantastic as well.
We skipped desserts as we were so full - the servings of the mains was quite generous, so we just decided to go have a few drinks. The mains were also served in these funky china - mine was served in a triangular dish and the caesar chicked was done in a long rectangular bowl - very interesting.
overall a very pleasant night and for just under $80, it was superb value!!!! definitely going back there sometime. did i mention it's in east perth right next to the foreshore? ;)

Food was great, waitress seemed a little disinterested, the outlook for a Saturday lunch was spectacular! Perth in summer...

Excellent!
Had a fantastic lunch! Staff were friendly and attentive and the food fresh and beautifully presented. No one could resist finishing their meal with one of the many tempting dessert selections from their cabinet. We whiled away the afternoon overlooking the water and will definitely be back again.

Below par
A visit to the Royal proved extremely disappointing. The service was nonexistant. After waiting 30 minutes to received a bottle of bubbly, it was unceremonously dumped on our table uncorked. It took another 15 minutes to get someones attention to open and deliver some flutes.
The prices both for food and wine were way over the top for the quality received. The tasting plate for shared entree contained both overcooked and undercooked items of nondescript variety. The mains were tasteless and served at room temperature.
After sitting among our finished dishes for another 45 minutes waiting to be cleared so coffee can be ordered we gave up and left for greener pastures.

not for functions
As a regular visitor to The Royal and the surrounding area, I thought this would be an ideal place to have a wedding function as the previous owners offered nothing but fantastic food and service and accommodated for our needs at all times. How disappointing to now find that the service and food standard is not at the level it once was. Impatient staff, slow food orders, bland menu, and not efficient nor professional in planning a function!

Those of you who read my earlier post (see below) will see that as a regular (East Perth) local I 'was' a big fan of the Royal. Alas since the new management has take over I'm disappointed to report that things have taken a dive for the worse.
Firstly there is the situation with table availability. In the past you could pretty much rock up (without a booking) and be guaranteed a table by sitting where ever you liked (provided the table wasn't reserved). Now it seems that since the new management have taken it upon themselves to pre-reserve most of the tables (including the causal drinking ones) regardless of whether they have bookings. I have on a number of occasions watched as walk-in guests are shunted inside (or told the restaurant was full) when the 'reserved' tables went patron-less for a few hours. It was laughable.
The menu is now bland, unadventurous and severely culled (in terms of item selection) from when the previous management were running the show.
Whilst some might not complain about fast food service, one gets the feeling we are being rushed out the door by the speed of the meal service. Patrons (in most cases) like to have a bit of a break between meal courses, but no sooner had our entree plates been cleared when our mains were rushed out. This is not a one-off occurrence, as it appears to be standard practice.
The wait staff are no longer attentive, courteous and friendly. We now regularly have to wait significant periods before being initially served for food or drinks (in a lot of cases having to venture inside to get our own drinks from the bar). During the course of the meal we constantly have to wave/flag-down staff who seem too intent on clearing and resetting tables rather than attending to the patrons.
I think the new management have spent way too much money installing CCTV cameras and wireless POS kits, and done little to improve the level of service, menu selection and staff.
C'mon guys, you've got a great location why not leverage this (like the previous management did) and lift your game by improving the service and the menu.

Great food, beautiful location, poor service
On this balmy evening we decided to head down somewhere i had been a few times, we arrived just after 7:30pm and ordered our meals and drinks, Turkish bread with dips for entree and the harvey beef rib eye with gourmet potatoes for mains, plus drinks. Drinks were served quickly, after about 30 minutes with no entrees in sight, we managed to get the attention of waitstaff to be told our entrees had been missed off the order. Fifteen minutes later our entrees were served, bread was of expected quality, we recieved a variety of dips, olive and balsamic, a crushed tomato concoction, sour cream and a very delightful capsicum dip. The Harvey beef rib eye I ordered well done and my companion ordered medium rare, the beef was beautifully presented with caramelised onions and gourmet potatoes, this main was great.Overall the location and food was great, compliments to the chef, service was very poor, so allow a bit of time to be served and meals, not recommended if you are in a hurry.

Fantastic new management!
I have enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere at the Royal for many years now. So when I heard there was going to be new management, I was more than a little nervous. I rounded up a group of 10 and made a reservation for Friday lunch (one of the Royal's busiest shifts). We were not only delighted that the quality hadn't slipped, we were amazed that somehow it had improved! The meals were fantastic, as was the warm, friendly service. By looking around it was clear to see we are not the only patrons that will be back in the near future. Cheers!

Well worth a visit
I'm an East Perth local and I would have eaten at the Royal at least a dozen times over the last 6 months (lunch and dinner). I have yet to have a bad meal there. The portion sizes are great (large). The menu is wide and varied (seafood, steaks and pastas). The prices are very reasonable: $18-$35 for mains. One of the highlights is that they have over 100 beers (about 18 on tap). Plus the clincher is the aspect (outlook) over Eastbrook Cove. There's nothing better than kicking back at the end of a day for a few Little Creatures Pale Ales (on tap), a great meal and watching the kaleidoscope of contrasting of colours melting over the cove as the sun sets.
