Roma Bar is a gorgeous little eatery perched above the street at the end of Cavenagh. This much-lauded cafe has been around since the '70s and has gained a following of eclectic characters, from struggling artists to cabinet ministers. After a few visits, it's easy to see what has kept these committed customers coming back.
The owners and lovely staff make an effort to remember their customers' names and encourage them to settle in for the long haul. BYO is welcomed, so patrons can match a special bottle of wine with their lunch, or even bring along some bubbles for an indulgent Champagne breakfast. Unlike many of the meat-loving restaurants in the Top End, Roma Bar devotes an impressive chunk of its menu to vegetarians. Even the meaty dishes are largely as healthy as they are tasty.
Though I have somehow managed to escape a caffeine addiction and can't personally vouch for the coffee, word on the street is that Roma's cups are "amazing". As Darwin is viewed by many as a caffeine wasteland with virtually no decent roasts to be found, a top long black or latte is a rare and welcome find.
