Established in 1851, the Robin Hood has long been a popular Eastern suburbs meeting spot. The decor blends the traditional with the modern, with lead lighting, Chesterfields and knights in shining armour (alas, not real ones) to be found alongside contemporary artwork. The regal dining room has dark timber panelling and a charming stone fireplace, creating an olde worlde feel that cries out for a goblet of red wine. If you've gathered some merry men and women around your table to feast, then a bottle of Peter Lehmann '8 Songs' shiraz will have everyone in fine voice.
Sharing plates are a good way to amuse your tastebuds while deciding on mains. The tapas version has treats of prawns in crispy prosciutto, pickled red chillies and anchovy twists with salsa verde. Since the arrival of chef Patrice Ricourt in recent years, the Robin Hood's dining profile has risen substantially. It is apparent why in entrees like warm braised rabbit on a salad of fennel and apple with tuna aioli. Venison, served with roasted rhubarb pudding, steamed bok choy and pomegranate molasses, is his specialty. Hot chocolate pudding with Baileys, roasted almond ice cream and chocolate sauce would have definitely got the thumbs up from Friar Tuck.
