A menu such as this usually sits against napkin dispensers on laminated tables in a dining room as stuffed as a yum cha dumpling. In other words, it is darn good. For those unfamiliar with the unwritten rules of Chinese restaurants, evidently, when a Chinese restaurant has not employed the services of an interior decorator, it is likely they have instead employed some highly skilled chefs. Likewise, when the decor shows finesse, this all too often does not extend through the kitchen doors. However, Rice Chinese Cuisine is the exception.
Sophisticated taste is evident in both design and dishes. Saffron-hued walls team with claret and black glass-topped tables. There's not a dragon or paper lantern in sight and the only Chinese cracker is that of the menu. It has the cuisine you line up for in Chinatown, here in stylish inner-city Parkside.
Seafood offerings are plentiful, including parrotfish, flounder, eel, mud crab and lobster. 'Ants on greens' is a mound of minced pork, dried shrimps and mushrooms seared with white wine, oyster sauce and served on a nest of greens; while tea-smoked duck seduces with its exotic aroma of Chinese tea and sweet sauce. Diners can delve into an eggplant, anchovy and garlic hot pot, and then dip into a chocolate hot pot with fruit for dessert.
