Ricardo's Trattoria might be small compared many of the surrounding eateries at Albert Park but it's big on elegance, with alfresco seating, classic crisp white linen and large windows opening out onto picturesque Dundas Place.
The food is sincerely Italian, with traditional dishes dominating the untranslated menu, alongside a few subtle variations such as gluten-free pasta. Expect fresh insalata selections and nibbly antipasto platters, alongside pizzas, pastas and classic mains. For a flavourful bite, try the polenta tre fromaggi (chunks of polenta grilled with three different cheeses); or the salad bufala - a Caprese-style salad with Shaw River buffalo mozzarella cheese, basil, extra virgin olive oil and rocket.
The wine list features a concise selection of Australian wines to wash down such mains as the spicy capelli d'angelo diavola (angel hair pasta with garlic, olive oil, spinach, pine nuts, chilli and stuffed black olives) or polpette di pollo (homemade chicken meatballs with celery, carrots, onions and tomato). Fresh flowers, a large gilt-framed Mona Lisa and a vehement refusal to serve takeaways tastefully assures customers that Ricardo's values the fine dining experience.

Best value for money; 5 star service.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Ricardo's Trattoria. We arrived unannounced and were immediately accomodated (thanks to a cancellation). We were particularly impressed by the service offered, especially our waitress who knew the specials list by heart and described each dish in detail. The menu was extensive and it was refreshing to have vegetables included in the main dish unlike many restaurants these days. We enjoyed each of our three courses and felt it was the best value-for-money restaurant we had experienced. Andrea and John Diprose
