Red Tongue

Red Tongue is one of those fantastic all-rounder restaurants, one where you can show up for a coffee before work, a scrumptious lunch in the middle of the day, a quick cafe-style dinner in the evening and the usual express drinks and dishes in between. Fresh fruit, porridge, French toast and a traditional breakfast are available until around 4pm, while pizzas, platters and pastas are perfect for in-between meals. The main courses include a steak and curry of the day, chicken skewers, spanakopita rolls and a vegie stir-fry; while for dessert you can sample braised pear, pancakes and cakes. On a fine day or evening, most of Red Tongue's clientele will dine alfresco at the busy tables and chairs on Brunswick Street's colourful pavement. Feel free to throw your belongings onto the chairs around you - as a mark of reservation - until your friends arrive.

Never ever again
So I have been here a few times and never had a problem until recently. We went for breakfast on Good Friday and when the food took longer than usual we politely had to ask them how long it would be as we had a plane to catch. We said they could just cancel it but the waitress told us it would be ready soon and they would put it in a take-away container for us - we agreed as the waitress was really nice. So, we leave and I open the container and the food was disgusting! The bread was not toasted, just warm and the bacon was unbelievably bad- it was two strings of fat with the smallest amount of meat you can imagine. i will never again got to this place and I will tell everyone I know not to either.

Exceeding all expectations
My wife and I stumbled upon this fantastic little spot one day when we couldn't decide what to have for lunch. Red Tongue has really friendly, casual staff that make you feel right at home. We ordered a simple toasted pide and pasta dish. We were expecting your standard cafe quality meal, but we got so much more!

The food was an absolute TREAT! Amazingly tasty and well presented. Serving sizes are 'just the right amount'. (No ridiculous over-serves here).

The fries that come with the toasted pide options seem a little out of place, because everything else has a nice touch of class.

I'm now at the restaurant regularly and only once has the food been a little less than ideal.

The atmosphere is great - it's got two things that are so commonly missing along brunswick street: tables that have enough surface area (rather than trying to fit 4 people around a table clearly meant for 2) and plenty of room between tables so that you don't feel crowded even when the place is full. This is even true of the outside area.
