Red Squirrel

Filling out a short list of quality Coogee eateries is this mod-Oz eatery with Zen-like surrounds and a penchant for organic meats. Red votive candles set the mood of the 'meditation-chic' decor, featuring mini Buddhas, modern prints and a kitchen concealed behind a bamboo blind. Solid starters include the seared scallops and duck with black bean pancakes. Desserts are worth pacing yourself for, especially when topped off with a big ceramic mug of their rich hot chocolate.

The Red Squirrel
Four of us visited this restaurant on a Tuesday night as it came recommended (we were the only people to dine there for the whole night). The food was very average, sloppy mash and just seemed to be thrown on to the plates. Two of us ordered the chicken and when we cut through the middle it was RAW. So it was taken back to the kitchen to be cooked again!! Without an apology even. Did'nt quite get the complimentary 'sliced bread' on a plate at the start!. The waitress was pleasant enough but could learn a thing or two about 'personal grooming' a bit off putting to say the least. Also can't say I like my meal being served with wet and greasy hands. Very hit and miss, none of us will return here.

Red Squirrel - Disappointing
Bread on arrival was supermarket sliced, with small bowl of odd oil with drop of balsamic at bottom, which you couldn't get to, disappointing. Aromas from kitchen were not appetising... Entrees, scallops were overcooked & didn't look/taste fresh! Duck was overcooked & dry, no flavours. Mains, lamb shank, well below standard, bland, mash potato lumpy. Lobster filled ravioli was ok, but bland. We went else ware for desert as food overall was bland, odd combinations with cheese a dominant feature on the menu...service was slow...staff boring. Definitely won't go back!

The Red Squirrel
I had read a few reviews about The Red Squirrel and they were mixed. So, I took a chance and went there.
The food was bland to the extreme. There was no culinary flair. We ordered a salmon dish and it arrived on a bed of vegetables which were swimming in what appeared to be water. Not only that but the food arrived luke warm. This was unacceptable and a great disappointment.

Quaint
We took a chance with going to the Red Squirrel without hearing any reports or reviews about this restaurant but was pleasantly surprised with what we found. This quaint restaurant with a casual atmosphere has good quality organic food, reasonably priced with friendly staff. The only thing that I would say is that it took awhile for the food to come out, though we only had mains. Other than that the dining experience was very enjoyable and we are likely to return to try out the rest of the menu. And bring some friends!
