It's the original home among the gum trees - well, not exactly home, but a cafe, art gallery and B&B. Slap-bang in the centre of the McLaren Vale wine district, Red Poles dishes up lunch on shady, vine-covered verandahs and beneath the umbrellas on the lawn, surrounded by peaceful bushland. The Italian-influenced menu starts with the simple - soup and bruchetta - and moves to the complex, such as romano cheese souffle serviced with pepperonata, salsa verde and fresh parmesan. And could you have an Adelaide menu without salt and pepper squid on it? There are also a series of platters for one or many, with local olives, meats, cheeses, fruit and lavosh, Red Poles' own antipasto, house-made pate and the house dukkah. It's totally geared toward a lazy lunch, with a full licence that kicks off with sparkling wines by the glass from $4.50 through to reasonably priced bottles of McLaren Vale wines from $20. The restaurant is in a typically Aussie building of corrugated iron and pressed earth, which also houses the gallery showcasing the work of Fleurieu Peninsula artists. And if you really don't want to leave, curl up in one of the three B&B rooms behind the cafe.
