Red Hot Wok

With a name that confesses the secret to great Asian cooking, this restaurant delivers on its word with a hot mix of customary Malaysian and Chinese dishes. Adding some extra zing to an otherwise standard Eastern-inspired menu, the Red Hot Wok serves an interesting range of pippies and crabs. There's also the zesty red wok duck or lemon duck - and fish heads for those who prefer a more pithy Asian experience. Pricier than some of its other Chinese counterparts, it's nonetheless a filling feed with a convenient takeaway option for worn out 9-to-5ers.

An old favourite
Shame on me for taking such a long time to give a positive review for this wonderful restaurant! I've been dining there frequently for a number of years and it never ceases to amaze me! The quality and flavour of the food is fabulous because it really is authentic Malaysian, as good as the food I eat in Malaysia! It was a great homely atmosphere. I remember one time it was someone's birthday so the staff blasted out a happy birthday song in english and chinese from a CD while they brought out a cake and it was HILARIOUS! All the customers got into the spirit and sang along as well. The prices are very reasonable despite being situated in a swanky part of Melbourne. The staff are nice, attentive and friendly. I can't believe all the negative comments that have been posted here but they do date back a few years ago. Do yourself a flavour and try out their sizzling tofu, sambal vegetables and most importantly chilli mud crab when in season. The lunch menu is also quite diverse with a wide selection of rice and noodle dishes to choose from. The past year it has become EXTREMELY busy so make sure you call and make a reservation to avoid disappointment as I have observed lines of people waiting outside the restaurant and they weren't on the weekend necessarily! In conclusion... I love Red Hot Wok.

Going downhill
This was one of our favourite place and we frequent it at least once a month. The food is as good as back in Malaysia, especially the curry fish head and kangkung belacan.

However, recent visits have left us dumbfounded and disappointed. The food used to be 4 stars but now it's just plain ordinary. I suspect they might have changed their chef but nothing explains the bad service you get now. Will stop going here unless there is some improvement. You have been warned!

A hidden gem
Even though I just got takeaway tonight, the restaurant gives out a very homely feel. The service was somewhat attentive and the atmosphere filled with friendly chatter and warmth. A hidden gem among the other bigger restaurants along the strip. My flaky tofu and mince pork bitter melon really served my appetite well, although it did put a little damper on my wallet.

This is a great restaurant, cheap, fast and authentically Malaysian. To die for - sizzling tofu, torch ribs, chilli crab... Definitely child-friendly.
