Red door is a emperial success!
After returning from a two year Chinese sabatical it was a great dining experience to dine at Red Door. Wow! was my first impression! it was like being back in a Beijing 'hutong'(laneways in Beijing).
The corkage charges we're reasonable, however we went for the traditional Tsing-Tao beer which seems to be the perfect, crisp lager that compliments the food so well.
The dumplings we ordered were some of the most authentic, generous little morsels i have eaten. All packed with great fillings, and hand crafted. No mass produced crap here folks! The sticky rice, and Pork Zhurong ( in cassia bark ) was melt in the mouth, eat with a fork, and loaded with flavour. As were the BBQ pork buns and simple vegetables with oyster sauce.
We were all in aggreance that Red door was a refreshing, easy going, traditional, cultural experience that is really hard to find here. I would definitely recommend to anyone - for a relaxed, take-it-easy time, where you will be well fed and watered, then set free onto the cold Melbourne streets. Do yourself a favour, and check it out.

it started badly and got worse!!
Well, where do we start? Here we were hoping for a relaxing Yum Cha experience on a gorgeous Melbourne autumn sunday and booked for 5 at Red Door in Windsor. Our first impressions were very positive but our initial enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by the excessive corkage fees.. $5 per beer and $5 per bottle of wine! as we were drinking both, we were concerned that we may have over extended our budget without ordering a dish! Upon questioning the (rude and abrupt) waitress, we were told that this corkage is "industry standard" and "I don't make the rules!" Okay, so let's hope the food is good! Well, this is where things really took a turn for the worst! We ordered 4 entree dumpling dishes while we waited for our extra guest. 30 mins later we were informed that one of the four dishes was unavailable. Ten minutes later, 1 of the 2 dishes arrived, 15 min later another appeared but by now we were so hungry (and annoyed!) that we cancelled the remaining order and demanded the bill. So after an hour an a half, we had the pleasure (or misfortune!) of eating 2 soggy, unimpressive dumpling dishes and left with a bill of $25 which equates to $10 corkage (we got a discount coz we were visibly agitated!) and $15 for two unremarkable dishes! Forget it, if you want Yum Cha and friendly service, Red Door is not the place. So much potential but no idea!
