This fine diner in South Perth is owned and run by former Halo Chef Scott O'Sullivan, providing an interesting and enthusiastic mod-Oz menu. His culinary creations include the slipper lobster (grown in Western Australia) with ravioli and a neat little side salad to offset the richness; or perhaps the beef and rabbit pie is more your thing with an earthy braise of organic beef served next to rabbit and shitake mushrooms in shortcrust pastry. O'Sullivan is very skilful with his pastries and this pie, along with a traditional suet pudding, won't leave you feeling disappointed. If you're into sweet treats and can't decide which dessert to chose (they all sound so good), finish your dinner with the delicious tasting platter, featuring all the desserts on the menu in their cute, miniature form.

Delightful!
Had a wonderful special anniversary dinner here with my partner. The decor and very low lighting make it feel cosy and intimate.
The food was amazing... Portions were small, but so exquisitely plated up, it nearly broke your heart to destroy and devour... The tiny appetiser soup was very tasty and the palate cleansing sorbet was so good I could've eaten a bowl of it! My partner had half a dozen mixed oysters for entree while I had the scallops. For mains he had scallops and I had venison. Dessert was very tricky- in the end I had a beautiful cheese plate with a very ripe piece of creamy brie while my partner indulged his sweet tooth with the three English sweets.
We will definitely be back!

Pure Excellence
Well what can I say; at last Perth has a restaurant serving food of the highest calibre in an unpretentious setting. I have found the service to be outstanding and the food simply stunning, a very clever menu, with some surprise twists. The wine selection I have found to be excellent, and have been impressed by the knowledge shown from the staff when we have asked questions regarding the food & wine. I have now visited this restaurant a number of occasions and have recommended Red Cabbage to several friends and business colleagues who have all been equally impressed. The staff instantly recognised that we have become regulars and welcome us back each time with genuine excitement. This visit I took my best friend who had wanted to sample Red Cabbage for sometime, finally we made it and again were not disappointed, she chose the belly pork entr?e which she said is to die for, while my favourite of the evening was the Study of Fish, to finish we decided on the miniature of desserts this is such a great idea as its perfect to share.
I am looking forward to my next visit

Bring a very big wallet and very little appetite
I think I should have read the reviews more fully before I booked in here. All in all, dining here was a very expensive exercise and I would only ever go back again if someone else was paying for it AND if I had eaten first.
Food - Well the food was "nice" BUT (a) not enough and (b) there was a very poor choice of dishes.
We had two vegetarians in our group but, although there was a so-called vegetarian starter and a main course neither of them were appealing AND the price, especially for the main course, was outrageous just for some tofu.
I wanted fish - I mean what restaurant doesnt have a Fish dish? Here they have a "Study of Fish" ...hmmm...yes a study alright - you needed a magnifying glass to study what the heck was on your plate. I thankfully didnt order that dish (two of our group did though - more fool them).
I ended up having one of the entree dishes but supposedly a "main course size". All I can say is that I would hate to see the entree size if that was a main course size. It consisted of two zucchini flowers and 5 very small scallops and a small dollop of green leaves. I hate to think what they charged me for that.
Normally, I never have dessert but I was still so hungry that I just had to have something, so 3 of us did order dessert. Once again dessert consisted of miniscule portions and was not really very exciting or interesting.
We thought that a dessert called "Coffee and Doughnuts" would come with coffee (as a drink) but the wait person was quite rude when she told us that we had to order coffee extra!! What the?
Atmosphere - As a lot of reviewers have said there is no atmosphere at this place and I have to agree but at least the tables were not cramped in against each other and you didnt have to shout to talk to each other.
Service - I have read in other reviews that the service was excellent but what "service" we got was appalling. The girl who served us interupted us mid- conversation at least three times. She took away the wine glasses without even asking whether we wanted wine or nor (we did) and she was very rude when we asked if we could have a variation to a dish.
As the title of this review suggests ..make sure your wallet is well prepared for the shock of the bill and make sure you are not hungry (or maybe come here if you are on a diet).

Overrated
I made the mistake of ONCE again eating at a restaurant that was a given a favourable review by Gail Williams.
Service - Understaffed. The wait staff could not cope with greeting patrons, serving them or giving them any attention. I think a maitre 'd would have be useful.
We waited for way too long to be served. Patrons who came in after us were served before we were. When we finally got some attention the waitress almost walked away before she took our wine order.
Our waitress spilled my amuse bouche and all she could say was sorry and did not offer to replace the napkin or the serving.
Food - The roast pork as the first course was good. My duck main course was ok. Nothing special.
Dessert - We had the selection of desserts to share. Nothing special.

Good but not great
We arrived at Red Cabbage with a couple of friends for dinner on a Friday night. Had a fantastic start with the array of oysters, prepared in different ways. The molluscs were plump and juicy and the preparations complemented them as a garnish rather than overpowering the oysters. Unfortunately the establishment was let down by the mains. I ordered the rabbit cooked 3 ways. While I was expecting something hearty resembling a country stew in at least one of the 3 preparations, I was somewhat let down by the prissy offerings on my plate. Rabbit sausage and rabbit terrine were incredibly rich and they were covered with even more rich gravy. In fact everything on the plate was so rich I was longing for the watermelon granita to wash my palate. The salmon too was overcooked losing all of its natural flavours. However, the dinner was redeemed by the miniature desert sampler which was a real treat. The service too was fantastic and worth returning for (different mains next time). As we paid our bill, we were informed that the restaurant is called red cabbage because that was what was used back in the old days to garnish the dishes. I could certainly have done with more red cabbage for those mains.

Enjoyable without being outstanding
Went for our Anniversary. Thought the table position right under a light was a little bright but as they were busy, didn't ask to be moved. Must admit I felt like a display though. As someone else has stated, room has no ambiance. The complimentary starter was very tasty. We took our own (expensive) wine as they allow BYO Tuesday - Thursday. The server got the manager to open the wine as she was scared of the cork and the age (of the wine). Good move. Decanted nicely. We thought the menu was a little restricted. I will eat most things but there was nothing in the 5 starters that appealed. Definitely nothing for my OH. Mains were presented well. I had the Beef Cheek Suet on a bed of red cabbage and OH had Wagyu with a ravioli pillow. He said the ravioli plus the sauce overpowered the Wagyu and TBH thought the steak was not presented at its' best in such a dish. I thoroughly enjoyed my Beef Cheek. We shared sides of rocket leaves and fries. No room for dessert. Coffee was ok without being brilliant. Was an enjoyable meal and would suggest if asked, for a special occasion.

Deliciously Delicious :)
Food was fantastic!! The nero linguini was brilliant and a reason to come back again and again. My wife loved the salmon and we both loved the dessert tasting plate. Wine and coffee were great too. As were the sorbet palate cleansers. Staff were very attentive, but the place lacks a bit of atmosphere. I'm glad we took note of all the good reviews, and I'm coming back next Friday night too!

Overpriced, average and hard to find
Title says it all really. $39 for a miniscule piece of beef in a soggy yorkshire pudding, served on a massive plate with no veggies or salad. It was very Nouveau Cuisine - so old hat! The food was good to look at but so overpriced and undersized, and nothing special. Chef really needs to learn how to cook a decent light and crusty yorkshire pudding! This place was recommended for a family celebration - won't go again unless someone else is paying the bill and we want a light meal. Service was excellent though, so if you are a lighteater and are prepared to pay through the nose for average food, and you can find the place - in an office block with no signage...enjoy! Overall just average and nothing special.

Red cabbage - well done
Dinner for two to celebrate birthday. Had not been here before although it was on the list to try. Service was warm and friendly from arrival, with a nearly full room. Menu and wine list has good breadth although a little excy. Restaurant had a comfortingly snug atmosphere, given it was a chilly November night. Warm summer nights outside should be sensational. Mains were well plated and tasted incredible. Service attention throughout dinner top notch. Definitely worth a return visit!!

Ticks all boxes!
A great restaurant that ticks all the boxes. The service is polite and efficient while the food speaks of quality and has an unpretensious way in how it is done. I have been several times now and never been disappointed. This is a very smart restaurant but has a nice casual feel to it allowing you to sit back and enjoy the experience. I would love to see a degustation menu from these guys... it would be awesome.

What a gem
This was a last minute choice and having read a few reviews on this site was encouraged to try it. Was glad I did. The service was impeccable - friendly and knowledgeable. One downside was that there didn't seem to be a maitre'd or restaurant manager on duty. I always find it helpful to know who is in charge. The wine list (both white and red) were very well chosen and decent serving sizes. The food was a real treat. Oysters were super fresh (although the blue sea salt was a bit strange and not entirely necessary). Suet pudding was thoroughly enjoyable. Beef fillet and cheeks were good but not outstanding. I didn't try the dessert on this occasion but fully intend to next time I visit. While I prefer a restaurant on the quiet side, although it was near full, this restaurant was lacking slightly in atmosphere. Great for couples or small to medium sized groups. The paintings featured on the wall have to go (terribly amateur). On the whole - I liked it!

Here to stay!
I thought it was about time we tried the replacement restaurant to the ever changing venue, to see how long it would last. Wow! Great atmosphere and great choice of food and wines. I was with a group of people that really didn't know what to try, surely enough they helped us out by bringing out small platters of most of the menu, one at a time. A great idea also to have a choice of all the dessert on one plate. I will be joining Red Cabbage more often, in ensuring they stay for a long time.

What a treat!
We enjoyed a superb meal on a Friday evening - balmy and still as it was. From our arrival to departure, we could not fault either the service, the staff or the food. We shared a lovely bottle of chilled riesling while eating our way through an entree of scallops (delicious - with just a hint of chilli!) then on to our mains - interspersed by complimentary mouth cleansers of sorbet - and finished with excellent coffees. Thank you. We will return. The prices were very good - especially compared with the previous week when we had a family gathering at an overpriced, noisy venue. Being locals it is especially appreciated. Well done on providing such a fantastic, exciting and innovative menu and all that goes with it!

What a treat...
My partner suprised me on our 1st anniversary (seems like a common place to dine for on a special occasion!). From start to finish, the service was second to none. I can't disagree with the review left on 19/11/07 - everything was superb, the food was amazing and original. Try the tempura oysters, they're fab! Both in and outside the restaurant have been set up rather modern, however both intimate and cosy. We sat and preferred the outdoor seating area; the lighting set the mood and made it extra romantic!

Red Cabbage - how fabbage
We went to Red Cabbage before the Joan Armatrading and Brian Ferry concert Saturday - so were already psyched but WOW! What a place for our 1st anniversary and many after this! The ambience was fabulous, the service really attentive without being intrusive and the food was truly amazing. The bill was reasonable and this is most definately my new fave! Thanks so much Red Cabbage! A new level of cool, right down to the business card and the water pitcher and the complimentary consomme!
