Smack in the middle of the North Hobart strip, the Rain Check Lounge has a mural just inside the door that zaps visitors into a semi-psychedelic state. Thus rendered, they are plied with coffee, beer, wine and Italian-inspired contemporary cuisine while a little funky music bops on in the background. The cafe is comfy and usually hovers around quarter full all day, except for rush hours of course.
It's a great sign of Hobart's sophistication that you're not allowed to smoke anywhere, but you can drink pretty much everywhere (obviously moderation is implied). So an afternoon on the couch in the Rain Check Lounge could be tempered with a glass or two of red, sweet potato and pine nut fettuccine in a sage cream sauce.
The lunch menu is innovative within the bounds of a cafe-style selection, and dinner, with some of the lunch meals available, is generally a little heartier. Selections such as the baked flathead fillets on saffron mash and sauteed bok choy with lemon dressing sound pretty inviting.

help me out
How do you justify charging $4 for a bread roll. When patrons clear their own tables and are told to put the dishes on the counter, you know there's something not quite right. Standard fare, the service really needs a shake-up

Hobart's best tappas!
Happiness is dinner at Raincheck on a warm evening - tappas with a glass or two of red, the best tirramisu I've ever eaten and excellent espresso.

Big breakfast at a small price
The breakfast we had was fantastic and perfectly cooked. The pot I had for my tea had a little too much water in it but other then that great. Great atmosphere, great location, great people and great price.
