Past the rickety wooden screen doors at the deli entrance is a delicious array of continental cakes and pastries. This deli section provides sustenance for residents on the run. The freshly made muffins, chocolate and fig baklava and Portuguese tarts are just the sugar kick, though the word is that their black coffee is an excellent heart-starter. If you need a quick stop, you can relax and soak up the sun with a cup of tea on the outside tables or on the '60s diner-style red bench seats in the attached sitting room. The room is dominated by a mural of what could be any of the customers, lazing on a lime pastel blanket. The breakfast menu is the star attraction, and the marinated mushrooms with provolone and rocket on bruschetta is a favourite. There is no wine list, but plenty of refreshments in the drinks cabinet in the deli.

Inconsistent
I live around the corner from this place, and since it opened I have been there many times.
I have had some of the best brekkies ever, and most of the time great coffee. I have also had watery spinach and poached eggs where the bread is so soggy it has to be scooped up! Last week I had a coffee where the milk had clearly been boiled, and it tasted wrong.
I have had great service (especially when they first started) but I have also had awful service, similar to one of the other reviewers. I was with a group of three and had ordered a dish that included a quail egg. The other two meals arrived within 15 minutes. Mine arrived after half an hour, with no egg. When I asked where the eggs were, I was told they didn't have any. Why this wasn't added to the listing on the specials board I don't know. Why I wasn't told when I ordered I don't know. Why I wasn't offered a regular poached egg, I don't know. Anyway I asked to have a poached egg brought out...and 20 minutes later (whilst my dish was still sitting in front of me) there was still no poached egg. My companions had finished eating and I had nibbled on some bits and pieces on my plate. I went in, by this time quite frustrated, and was told the eggs were still cooking (!!!). 20 minutes later I got my egg, with no hint of apology whatsoever. When I brought up the point that everything about the dish and the rude service was unsatisfactory I got a rude reply. This was NOT a busy day, it was a Wednesday and there were three other tables.
After these conflicting experiences, I am now very wary of returning, and am preferring instead to try the cafe accross the road, which is not as fancy, but serves a decent meal. Why Quen St is so popular, I no longer understand. It's become more of a hangout than the foodie haven it once was.

Rustic cafe with soothing food and coffee
This is a great little suburban cafe, and is much needed in a quality cafe starved Adelaide. The coffee is strong and excellent, the breakfast food is interesting and fabulously tasty and there are great sweets, such as the portuguese custard tarts mentioned in the review.
Having grown up in the cafe crazy atmosphere of Fitzroy, Prahan and Collingwood in Melbourne but now living in Adelaide this little cafe has been a gem for me. A long time regular visitor to this cafe I can assure you that you'll have a great experience.
That said, Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10 - 11 am can be busy here and the small kitchen has to work overtime to keep up, they usually manage this without disruption (an exception was experience by the previous reviewer it seems, rest assured that it is an exception).
Try it, its great.

Disappointment with a smile
I had heard such great things about the Queen Street Cafe however my experience was the total opposite. To start with a positive, the staff were very friendly, but that is about it. The meal I ordered took one hour to arrive, and it was such a simple meal, that of poached eggs on toast. I asked the waiter after about 40 minutes of waiting for my meal if it had been forgotten and he said that it was coming right out, but I had to wait another 20 minutes. Other patrons who arrived at the cafe after us were served their meals first. Yes the cafe was busy but an hour for poached eggs is absurd. The other meal that was ordered for a child was supposed to be very basic (as there was no actual childrens menu) so I asked for some adjustments which just included leaving out most of the ingredients which the waiter said was no problem, however it came with much seasoning which was not appropriate or favourable to the child I was with. Once the meals were served, the eggs were cold, as was the chicken (which was supposed to be warm) and you'd think poached eggs on toast would be warm, but it wasn't. It's with much regret that I choose not to return to this cafe.

Brilliant little Cafe/Restaurant
Being located near a friends house, we decided to sample the delights of this newly opened cafe.
The food was brilliant, the service was friendly and quick, the selection of sweets/desserts was great!
It's located near some great little shops, featuring clothing and art, all in all it was a pleasure, we shall be visiting this great little find again sometime soon.
