Quirky purple fittings combine with a posh, European tone at this popular New Farm cafe. The emphasis is on Mediterranean-style food, from pasta and antipasto to tapas plates.

Double plus good
Went to The Purple Olive to use our Entertainment Card voucher, but we'll definitely be back!
Service was attentive without being invasive, friendly and good advice provided when asked for. We shared a delicious plate of bruchetta, and both went for the surf and turf special - prawns in a light but creamy garlic sauce over a steak cooked exactly as requested. We were both very impressed. Wine list was good, we were very pleased with the bottle we shared, at the suggestion of our waiter.
Nice location, friendly atmosphere, all round a very pleasant experience.

Disappointed
We visited this restaurant for a birthday. I was disappointed that I couldn't order a traditional Italian dish like lasagne, pizza or carbonara. The pizza they did serve as an entree was bland. The meatballs which I ordered for the main was cold in the middle. The flavours were nice but the meals are over priced for the amount of food you get. We were still hungry and had to have another meal at home. There was also an issue with seating in the restaurant. The table beside us were told no more people could dine with them as they did not have any more seats in the restaurant. Our table was overcrowded and some had to eat on the corner of the table.

delicious pasta minus the Linguini
We arrived for an admittedly late dinner and we ordered bread and olive oil for starters and crab linguini and osso bucco for mains. The waitress informed us that they had run out of linguini and would it be ok to use something else or have the chefs make some fresh. Having worked as a chef, I know how annoying that would be at half 9 (when the kitchen closes at 10) so I suggested they use something else. the meal was delicious regardless and the crab was so fresh. The osso bucco was good, although very rich and heavy- more of a mid-July meal than mid- December delight!

Don't bother
Never seen such fat on a steak before. All disguised under a sauce, my boyfriend had to discreetly spit it out! Certainly wouldn't serve this up at home so why does a restaurant think they can? Service was bad, just forgotten about. Lively atmosphere that's all that's going for the place. Duck dish had no taste.

Simply the best
The Purple Olive is one of those rare gems you find only once in a while. This has become our most favourite place to eat and celebrate our special occasions. We even had our wedding reception there! The owners, Tamsin and Malik, made sure our day was very special. We highly recommend the Purple Olive expreience to eveyone who loves superb food and quality service in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. 5 Stars all the way. Cheers!

Highly recommended
We really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was absolutely fantastic and the service was exactly the way we like it - super friendly without being fake and extremely efficient. I would definitely go there again and recommend this place to others.

Amazing food
We had garlic prawns and antipasto to start with - top dishes. The selection and flavour with the antipasto was brilliant. For mains we tried chicken with Sardinian prawn sauce and the porcini and white truffle oil risotto. Loved it, absolutely beautiful. The staff were great and made us feel comfortable. We will be back.

My favourite pan-Mediterranean restaurant
I was not a fan of the antipasto, but otherwise everything I have had from Purple Olive is great and sometimes outstanding. That creamy seafood pasta dish they do is absolutely divine. The service, except for an order mix-up involving a trainee waitress on her first night, has always been superb. I like what they did with the wall recently, adds to the ambience.

Top Service, Top Risotto
The waiters were very attentive from beginning to end. The antipasto plate was disappointing, with food either overcooked or dripping in oil. However the seafood and duck risottos were both divine and definitely worthy of a return visit.
