Pure South

Since Tassie produces so much wonderful food (and more recently, wonderful wine), it makes sense to open a restaurant in Melbourne that celebrates the produce of the Apple Isle. The wine list is incredibly comprehensive in its Tasmanian range and the menu leaps from Bass Strait calamari to Flinders Island beef tartare with all stops in between. The cheeses in particular will delight.

Downhill
I remember when this place was all about the ingredients. It is great inside, the service was attentive but the food is not as good as it used to be. Certainly not poor but a little disappointing for where it is; I won't rush back.

Most definitely gone South
The wine was good; the food was mostly bad. The lamb had no taste and my husbands steak, though good, was accompanied by overcooked and undercooked vegetables.
The two side salads we ordered tasted of vinegar and nothing else.
There are much better restaurants on Southbank than this one.
I cannot fault the service though, good wait staff.

Would Recommend
After reading mixed reviews about Pure South, I felt keen to 'give it a go'. My partner and I were pleasantly surprised and overall had a lovely evening. Unfortunately my steak wasn't something that I can claim lived up to the hype of the great produce, but that aside everything else was great. It's a nice restaurant devoid of the stiffness of some, it actually had a real vibe about it inside. Our waiter was faultless to the point we even felt obligated to search him out to say thank you upon leaving (along with leaving a tip!).

The menu is very well priced, along with the wine list. We will certainly put on our list of places to recommend or revisit.

Pure South
It seems from other reviews, that Pure South can be very god or very bad. My experience at a 5 course degustation seafood dinner featuring Tasmanian wines was of an outstanding culinary experience. The poached ballotine of ocean trout unbelievably good

Slow is an understatment, mediocre is a compliment
I actually went to Pure South due to the mixed review on here. It took 20 minutes to get a menu (yes I timed it), and the food also took about 25 minutes. When the food came out, it was mediocre at best. There are heaps of restaurants that offer much better service and food. We waited almost 30 minutes for the waiter to come back to take our desert order which we passed.

My party's feelings about the service was mutual with the surrounding tables, since we were all complaining about the slow service. Don't waste your time at pure south.

Gone South?
How this restaurant got one hat is a mystery to me when so many others are so much better.

After reading several reviews we were all looking forward to a delicious meal but alas, not to be. Quality of the produce was very good overall - but generally bland and lacking in flavour - eg the chateaubriand - lovely tender meat but dull sauce. The ravioli were almost completely lacking in overall taste and the desserts were pleasant but unrefined.

Perhaps worst of all were the almost completely inattentive staff! Despite a busy Sunday at Southbank the place was mostly empty and while we saw plenty of staff running around the place, we were always waiting to be served.

It took ages to be asked for drink orders after we arrived, and even longer to receive them. We were never asked for drink top ups as they approached being empty, and had to ask several times for extras like bread.

Very disappointing for a "1 hat" restaurant and not good enough overall. We won't be returning.

Entree choice was not available so had to settle for something else. Both mine and my husband's main meal were very salty to the extent they had to sent back. Dessert wasn't too bad. Food wasn't plentiful though. Waiting service was very slow. Wine list is way too pricey. To top it all off, they overcharged us by putting someone else's drinks on our tab. Will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone and will definitely not be returning to dine there, ever.

Pure Indulgence
What a fantastic meal. Absolutely superb. You could actually taste how fresh and pure the ingredients were: scallops actually taste like scallops (not rubber or chicken). Highly recommend this restaurant, and we would not have given it a go if it were not for the reviews we had read at this site. Pure indulgence and absolutely superb.
