Opening on the site of what was once the Criterion Hotel, Public Inn stamps its mark, providing a point of difference while maintaining and even lifting Castlemaine's serious food and wine credentials. On the menu is provincial bistro food, with pared-back European dishes that exude sophistication and rely heavily on the excellent quality of the local produce used. With an entire wall of wine barrels filled with local wines to be poured straight to your glass, this place is a food and wine lover's wet dream, and practically begs you to stay and sample everything it offers. The lunch special of two courses and a glass of wine from the barrel wall is well worth your time, say the locals, who have embraced this addition to the area with open arms, stomachs and wallets.
