You'll need to come here regularly just to keep up with the specials. What better excuse to repeatedly indulge in Portia's fabulous Asian (mostly Cantonese) cuisine? While the food is definitely the highlight, this Chinese eatery does set itself apart with its clean, bright decor. Fresh flowers are dotted throughout, indicating a desire to create a welcoming environment, while pavement seating allows diners to soak up the picturesque affluence of Kingston while they ponder the menu. Regulars swear by the crispy duck pancakes with hoisin sauce, followed by the King Island fillet with pepper sauce, but those who are finding it difficult to make a decision (a totally understandable dilemma) might ask one of the gorgeously cheery staff for some knowledgeable advice.

Must try the duck pancakes
As usual, the service was excellent and very friendly. A must is the duck pancakes, they are expensive for an entree but can be shared between 2 people and are worth it!

Hostess with the mostess!
Coming from Sydney we weren't sure what to expect with a Chinese restaurant called Portia's Place. Wow... What a pleasant surprise. Such friendly staff, and delicious food. The whole experience topped off with a visit from Portia herself. The duck pancakes a highlight and the shantung lamb unbelievable. It's easy to understand why it's a favourite with canberra's top pollies.

what a huge dissappointment
We thought we'd found a lovely place to have an early dinner. The menu on the door sounded good and reasonably priced. There were awards on the wall as we walked in. Thats where it all stops. By the attitude of the staff, we felt as if we were not welcome to dine at such an early hour, it felt as if it was an imposition. The food came out fresh looking, but was heated, raw, hard and not cooked, with a bit of sauce out of a bottle squeezed in a pattern over the top, basically flavourless. Beware, they seem to add on approx six dollars PER plate if you eat in rather than take away. The hot towels at the end were the best part of the meal. Not sure what they could have possibly won the awards for..??

Pricey, but worthy of its reputation
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I've been here a number of times (usually for dinner, but a few group lunches too) and the food is consistently delicious. Service is speedy and unintrusive. I've found the service to be quite cheery and helpful - maybe because we've always been quite friendly to them too. They even managed to squeeze us in when they were fully booked out on a busy night - as long as we promised to be out of there at a certain time (which is totally fair enough).
Sure, it's a little pricey. But they've got some imaginative dishes here, and all dishes are incredibly well executed. Have never had anything here that has been 'meh'.

Hmm
It was just ok. We got the feeling we were not 'important' enough to be there and the staff were just happy when we left. The meals were ok, but nothing special. As for the atompshere - what atmposhere?!!

Not bad :)
We had a large group, which in a busy restaurant is a slight advantage. The service was excellent, the food pretty basic but still very nice. Can't say much for the atmosphere however. It's good without being great.

What's all the fuss about?
This place is always pretty full, which I took to be a good sign as far as a reputation goes. Portia's offers little more than take away style food at a premium price. A mate and I were there for dinner before we caught a movie and if we hadn't passed on coffee and dessert, we'd have missed it. The kitchen lost the order we were told. Surrounded by cheap plastic furniture that holds no appeal, they must rely on a take-away trade - even then, down the street is a better place.
