Don't go telling porkies about the Pork Barrel Cafe, a Canberra institution that sits in a privileged position amid the National Rose Gardens opposite Old Parliament House. Making use of its prime location, the Pork Barrel lets in rays of natural sunlight from all sides in its pergola-style alfresco set-up. Modern Australian cafe nosh, pizzas, salads and daily specials are joined by shared set menus, which feature everything from gourmet pizzas to mezze platters and antipasto. A garden adventure just wouldn't be complete without a glass of wine or a hearty beer.

Relaxed eatery
I've been here a few times with friends and workmates. The service is pretty much DIY - order and pay at the bar and your meal is brought out to you. If you're dining in a group, make sure you put your orders on the same docket so they can coordinate the timing. A couple of times, we've been in the awkward position of almost all meals arriving, bar one or two. Sometimes, the delay on the later meals has been incredibly long, and on one occasion the service wasn't up to scratch.
Generally, though, there are some decent choices - sandwiches, pies, pizzas and curries are the main fare. The food is cooked competently and is generally quite tasty. Pretty decent value for money. And just a beautiful spot in spring and ealy summer when the rose garden is in bloom.
The menu could do with a bit more variety, but as long as you don't eat there too often it's not too much of a problem. If there was a bit more variety, however, I probably would make the trip more often.

Beer & pizza - what a superb combo
As the title suggests, I thoroughly enjoy them both. The Pork Barrel pizzas have a great fluffy base & pretty tasty toppings, gourmet I s'pose you'd say. They also have my favourite beer on tap, the Zierholz that is brewed in Canberra (5 of the range) so I rate them pretty highly - their happy hours & pizza deals are great & will be a regular customer there.

Nice area, food is not up to scratch
The food is not as good as it should be in this area. As a cafe in the parliamentary zone, I would have expected much better grub.
Not to say it wasn't tasty, it was fine. I had the smoked salmon and cream cheese quiche. It was an eggy quiche mixture baked in some puff pastry. Very small serving. And while it wasn't terrible, it did not blow me away.
