Pope Joan, put simply, is a gourmand's wet dream. Owned by Ben Foster (of Kent Hotel fame) and Matt Wilkinson (ex-head chef of Circa, the Prince), you'd be hard pressed to think of a better pedigree for your local cafe. After all, it's not every day you get the opportunity to have one of Melbourne's most lauded chefs cook you breakfast. Well, until now.
Wilkinson's menu resonates with a simple elegance that can only be described as the honesty of food. No attempt is made to stock out-of-season produce and if you venture down the back you can see the kitchen garden in full seasonal bloom. However, Pope Joan doesn't get lost in its foodie philosophy. Marble-top milk crates and bespoke wooden furnishings show that these guys don't take themselves too seriously. If anything, Pope Joan is a reflection of the personalities of its owners, and like all things made as a labour of love, this one is destined for greatness.
