NME magazine had it right way back in 1986: Pop will eat itself. Not only did this quote spawn the seminal alt-rock band of the same name, but it also perfectly describes the phenomenon occurring in Melbourne's bar scene.
First it was the hidden bars, secreted away down non-descript alleyways; then rooftops, basements and converted garages. Nowadays it seems these are so commonplace you need to open a bar floating on the Yarra under a pedestrian footbridge just to get some attention.
As the more astute may have picked up in that nonsensical rant, this is exactly what Jerome Borazio (of St Jerome's and 1000 Pound Bend fame) has done.
With his latest venture the serial venue opener has once again deftly navigated that fine line between cutting edge and jumping the shark. Utilising a recycled timber motif with vague nods to its nautical location, Ponyfish Island has turned a bare space into a great little quirky space. The food side of things is kept simple, with waffles, toasties and bar snacks making up the majority of the menu, but like most Borazio venues look for this one to be a hit from the word go.
