Pony Lounge & Dining

This addition to The Rocks district combines the area's "olde-world" charm with the up-to-the-minute cosmopolitan style that Sydney's fickle socialites demand. The space has the stamp of designer Michael McCann all over it, with industrial stainless steel, exposed beams and raw brick contrasting with luxuriously glossy timber and piebald prints. The restaurant features a long deck, dominated by a 12-metre communal table, from which diners can look out over picturesque Kendall Lane or back towards the wide open kitchen.

Head chef Damian Heads and his team of hard-working culinary craftsmen are completely exposed as they whip up dishes from the series of woodfired delicacies promised by the menu. Coming off the grill are such dishes as the Tasmanian salmon with chickpea, fetta, chilli and herb salad and tahina dressing, or the eye fillet with slow cooked onion, pancetta, roasted beetroot and red wine sauce.

Disappointed
Booked for a special dinner, cost over $200, but sat outside on a verandah at long tressle like tables and benchs with another 30 unrelated persons - not my idea of a great dining experience, could get the same at a pub bistro!

What a fantastic night.......
My girlfriend and I are on holiday from the united kingdom and decided to spend a couple of days in Sydney. After wandering around the rocks area in the day we stumbled across Pony. I was immediately drawn to the restaurant from the large window that shows the working kitchen. When we arrived back at our hotel we decided to try and book a table and luckily got a table for 8pm. Upon arrival we were greeted and shown to our table. The decor stands out and the restaurant is very well lit. Clearly, there has been a great deal of thought gone into the design, with great results. On to the food. Entries: We ordered the Rock oysters and the crisp fried prawns. Both were amazing, the prawns with the szechuan spice and sweet soy were incredible. My girlfriend added the Oysters were amazing. Mains: We ordered the Slow cooked NZ venison and the Lamb tenderloin. Now, I normally get food envy when I try my girlfriends choice but I have to say they were both fantastic. The veal with the Parmesan and the lamb with the smoked tomato and lyonnaise potato were made for each other. Although completely stuffed, we decided to share a Passionfruit brulee. This was absolutely delicious and surprisingly light. Throughout the whole meal the waitress was attentive and continued to fill our glasses without us even noticing! The whole meal from start to finish along with the service and atmosphere was the best I have experienced in years. It's not cheap, but it's not overly expensive either. Certainly well worth the bill at the end. We even hung around for a couple of cocktails in the bar afterwards. We can definitely recommend the Jimmy Thai, truly inspired! The only reason I have given 4.5 stars out of 5 for service is due the fact you have to use the neighboring 'mall' toilets as they don't have their own. I put this down to the restaurant being an old building within the rocks area.

Disappointing-not worth the wait
After ordering nibbles and wine, waited over 50 minutes for main course with no explanation. Presumably secondary to the large hen party being served in the outside area. There was no apology for the delay so left before the mains were to be served. Werent the only table this had happened too-food didnt look like it deserved the elevated prices on the menu.
Disappointing and with the competition in the Rocks-service not up to scratch.

Good but not to die for
Arriving at Pony, there was a cool ambience about the place, which explained why it was so busy. It was packed. After a short delay waiting for our table, we were seated on a communal bench (we'd have preferred a table). The entrees were hit and miss. The sardine tart was delicious, so was the chorizo but the tasting platter was a bit light of food and the chicken skewers pretty average. But it was the mains that left us uninspired. We wanted beef, but the cuts were basic sirloin and rib. When they came, they were ok but nothing fantastic, which was what we were expecting from a place with such a reputation. Where was the wagyu or that little something special? When the bill arrived, we were suprised it came in at $115-a-head as we would have paid more for better. All said, OK, but nothing to write home about.

I was absolutely amazed. From the point of entry till we were bid goodbye the service was excellent. The food was well presented and the portions were the right size. An absolutely amazing wine list which we thought was very reasonably priced. Comte Lafond for $100, wow. The whole vibe of Pony is warm, friendly and full of charm. Starting with the layout of the place to the setting of the restaurant and the communal setting outside, the whole place has an ambience which definitely deserves an experience or 10. Pony ---- I think they should call it BIG HORSE.

Fab night at Pony
I recently dined at Pony, a new addition to The Rocks restaurant scene. I am a fan of the head chef, Damian Heads, and had been eagerly awaiting its opening. And it did not disappoint. The design of the restaurant is what first impresses. I have not seen anything like it in Sydney, and it is an amazing transformation of the old warehouse. Its small, elegant open kitchen was very inviting. The staff were quick to welcome me and you immediately realise you are in a top-quality restaurant. The menu is a great mix of tapas and mains (I had the chorizo and lettuce wraps) and the mains are very well-priced and delicious (I had the ocean trout). The food was superb. I was served by a lovely lady who was very efficient and had excellent knowledge of the menu and she recommended the food and wine which we adored. I loved Pony, and will definitely be spending many a summer’s night on the deck drinking cocktails.
