Like a fresh and juicy plum, this fine addition to the Salamanca Square dining scene carries a multitude of flavours just waiting to saturate the palate in glee. While freshly baked muffins and cakes are available between all meals, this chic restaurant's modern Australian lunch and dinner offerings truly shine the limelight on Tasmania's exceptional produce. Chef Mark Goodluck concocts distinctive delicacies including Marrawah eye fillet, yellowtail kingfish, Macquarie Harbour ocean trout, and James Squire prize-winning venison from Doo Town. Naturally, the wine list reflects Tasmanian tastes, with a few broader Australian and international inclusions on hand. On weekends, Plum attracts a sizeable breakfast crowd raring to try the house eggs Benedict and freshly made muffins awaiting consumption.

Nice little surprise
I've now been to Plum twice (in 1-2 months) and both times have been impressed by the service (not overbearing, but appear when needed, filling water glasses and answering questions regarding the menu). While dining with a party of 6, a request for 'rare' steak came out a little more than that. Staff were more than happy to prepare another meal, were apologetic, and without making a deal about it, made the person feel it was no problem at all. Several shared deserts left us wanting for nothing and the ice cream was absolutely delicious - an in-house creation. My 2nd dining experience was unplanned and in a group of 3. Again, attentive service and a rich grass-fed eye fillet spring to mind. An extensive wine list was appreciated. Reports that the chicken was a little on the dry side, were made up for by the flavoursome sauce accompniment. Try it for yourself!

An Unexpected Pleasure
When I booked for dinner at Plum, all I had to go on was the menu from their website. When we left, we had had one of the best meals we have ever had in Hobart. The dishes were original and interesting, but never too clever and always excellently executed. Both the quail and crab entrees were impeccable, with big flavours and - in the case of the crab - a tempura batter that you heard before you tasted. The mains were just the right step up in richness of flavours from the entrees, in just the right size portions to leave room for a shared desert - and what a desert! The yoghurt panacotta was feather light, and the plate had so many special treats that it was a voyage of discovery. The service was also impeccable, and being a small restaurant there was a real air of intimacy and familiarity. We would definitely and whole-heartedly reccomend Plum - it's in Salamanca Square, just so you don't miss it!
